Getting professional photos taken

As a practical step to take towards my goal of marriage & family, i am paying for some professional photos to use on Tinder & the like. There's a guy here who's experienced, has a studio, and a good catalog of work.

I contacted him saying i didnt want studio photos (i think they look obvious and cheesy) and he's fine to take some out and about in the town here. There's some nice spots down the beach, and i guess maybe one in a cafe. I'll take a few different shirts or whatever so not all in same gear. I did think about doing one down the outdoor gym here (basically some hang-bars on the beach).

Obviously i will be using the time before to get in as close to peak condition as possible.

He says an hour shooting, to produce 4 quality photos (end product) it'd be between 50-70 euros, he would do post-work on light and such forth too apparently.

I've no idea on the going rate, but that seemed reasonable enough.

Anyone else ever had professional shots done? Interested to hear if they make much of a difference, or any factors i should continue before doing so.

Obviously i will be using the time before to get in as close to peak condition as possible.

Yes. I've done this twice.
They make a difference, but you should have some more candid shots in the mix as well. Most important to have a pro one for you first pic.

Don't let them make you look gay (too much smiling and showing teeth like a goon, refuse that unless you look like Jack Nicholson when you smile). Also, for whatever reason I've picked really hot days to do outdoor shoots, don't do that.

You could probably avoid paying if you have a friend with good camera equipment take them. I know a few Asian guys that spend a lot on cameras, love to do photo shoots on location. Their stuff was probably better than the pro stuff I had done.

Look through a bunch of photos of guys and see which ones look good. Save those, and ask your photographer if he can replicate those.

If you have the photos done by a friend, make sure he’s got fill flash. Even when there’s enough light, you get better photos if the flash fills in the shadows around your face

Depending on where you live, you probably will not see much of a difference on tinder with professional photos vs regular. I would do this for social media platforms across the board, but not specifically for tinder with the goal of meeting higher quality women. You will be sorely disappointed.

Not for Tinder, but I’ve done two sessions for business photos and yes it is worth it.

Agreed, putting aside the problems with online dating it's been helpful to have good photos to put up on LinkedIn and other sites I use in my career.

Slightly offtopic, but I often find that, when a photographer comes to a business to take everybodys pictures, many people dont look that good on those professional pictures.

^what is that, working at the DMV? Demonstration of Marginal Value? Im not from the US maybe its and American thing.

More ontopic, and a reaction on the datasheet, take good cameras with you when you go out with friends, and go on pictures with them. For example, fun nights, boating, partying, festivals, traveling, those pics are important too.

Id say one with a jacket or blazer, one with a button up shirt, and one with a black t-shirt.

$70 euros seems a bit expensive to me but I do amateur photos, so I would do it myself. Those 70 euros can get you a decent point and shoot camera and a small tripod, but a pro portrait will make you look exponentially better. Just make sure to tell him not to use any digital editing or filters, it looks lame on men, and women will know that you are using touched up pictures on your profile for sure.

Yes, I did this and it worked very well for me.

The main thing I stuck to was:

a. 3 - 4 photos TOTAL
b. Each photo has something different - one is a photo of me in a suit, one is me hiking, and one is me dressed casually doing some other activity that I sincerely like, i.e. reading a book or playing a game of chess etc.
c. Tell the photographer you don't want the photos to look too pro or "studio style" with the exception of one of them.

3 great photos: one studio business photo, one candid doing some hobby photo, and one exercise photo and you are good to go!

P.S. one of the greatest successes I had with this was I used the photos a friend took of me. The friend was a hobby photographer. So the photos looked both pro (good camera, good photographer) and candid (he's my friend. So you get the best mixture of pro and warmth. The one exception to the casual photos was the business card style suited photo, that I had done in a studio setting. And I only used one to two of those photos max.

Churlish take. I use Tinder currently and do somewhat reasonably, location dependent. I dont live in the states or Western Europe (i am in the latter currently but not for long). Other parts of the world aren't quite as horrific as the States / Uk etc. Still shit, but hey.

It's not a long term thing, but as i will soon leave where i am and move back East, then i want to at least give myself every chance in every field.

Also outside of that I have crap photos in general, and would like nice ones for all matters.
