I had a similar but still very different situation, one where sexual abuse did take place, in fact. I knew of sexual abuse that had gone on long before I met some of the people involved. It was on record for years, so I wasn’t short of information about it. Multiple people knew by the time it got very heated, but that didn’t stop the slander train. No offense to sexual abuse victims, but they can be incredibly difficult to deal with when you’re a confidante of theirs. They’re messed up, but messed up in different, more understandable ways than false accusers. They lead double lives and try and separate the fake, sheltered world from the real world of trauma they share with people who know about the abuse and took it seriously. I finally blew the lid on the sexual abuse because the whole debacle ended up getting so stupid, only to receive dumbass physical threats from people with shit to hide and desperate claims I had been a fabulist and stirred up the sexual abuse allegations for my own enjoyment and pleasure. It was hilarious to be told that I would be killed for sharing this supposedly false information that she had shared in writing with multiple people. I did not change my plans or movements and told them to do what they needed to do. Her family went off the deep end through panic and said to anyone who would listen that I was opening financial accounts in her name, accounts which, of course, never existed. Her father really suffered a lot, having to buttress his position as head of the household by saying his baby girl was never sexually abused and the entire shitfight was based on lies. Anyway, as for the accounts... the bank confirmed they were faking and when the police were contacted, they also confirmed the family were not willing to file reports about any matter and had produced no evidence to counter the bank’s assertions that the accusation was a steaming turd-nothingburger. Naturally, the same family she should have been able to trust had no apology for me afterwards. My response was really simple: head off to the police, ask them to investigate, look at the girl’s own statements, and do what you will. Their activities with the police pretty much comprised an off-the-record chat and a refusal to make any official statements that would incriminate them. The police lieutenant confirmed their refusal to cooperate in writing. Whilst I see the issues involved with false allegations of sexual abuse/rape very clearly, I promise you guys that it can go both ways. Plenty of folks get slandered for outing genuine cases of malicious sexual behavior.
