I have great respect for Byzantine history and culture, but the state of the Greek Orthodox Church is worrying.

I will be moving to an area that only has Greek Orthodox and 'Church of the Genuine Orthodox Christians (GOC) of America' churches. Being unable to find a ROCOR or Antiochian within an hour's drive is quite disappointing

The GOC is a very odd Orthodox sect, almost a sedevacant, break-away 'trad' organization that is not in communion with any other Orthodox body, and broke away from ROCOR, ROAC, etc. Does anyone have any information or experience with GOC?

Genuine Orthodox Church of America​

The Genuine Orthodox Church of America (GOCA) is an independent Old Calendarist jurisdiction based in Buena Vista, Colorado, which sees itself as the only legitimate Orthodox church in America. It is not in communion with any Orthodox body. However, it has in the past claimed to maintain communion with the Genuine Orthodox Church of Greece, headed by Abp. Makarios of Athens. Both Archbishop Makarios himself and his synod have repeatedly stated in official documents that they have no association whatsoever with this group. The GOAC is headed by Abp. Gregory (George) of Denver.
The GOAC was formed out of a group originally under the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, which later joined three Greek Old Calendarist jurisdictions rapidly in succession (namely, that of Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Athens, the short-lived Synod of Kallinikos of the Duodecanese and Archbishop Makarios of Athens), followed by the Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church (ROAC) (2000), and is now independent following the ROAC's deposition and excommunication of Abp. Gregory (2004).[1][2] With its history of being a part of various jurisdictions, the Genuine Orthodox Church of America tends to be in a constant state of hostility toward its former affiliations.
The jurisdiction's primate, Gregory (George) of Denver (born an Antiochian), who was consecrated to the episcopacy in the ROAC, claims to be "the only hierarch in the United States who has remained free of any communion or union with this heresy of Ecumenism who has valid apostolic succession," and thus claims "to be truly canonical."[3]
In 2007, Archbishop Gregory received Archbishop Ambrose (Moran-Dolgorouky) of New York City, one of many episcopi vagantes who claim to have been consecrated by independent Ukrainian bishops, into the GOCA. After his reception, he participated in the consecration of Archimandrite John (Egan) as Bishop of Colorado Springs, along with Archbishop Gregory, on January 6, 2008. Since the reception of a bishop can only be canonically accomplished by a synod, Archbishop Gregory initially claimed that Archbishop Makarios of Athens gave him verbal consent for the reception over the telephone. This was vehemently denied by both Archbishop Makarios and his Synod of Bishops. Six months later, Archbishop Ambrose left the GOCA and returned to his former status as an independent bishop. Since the consecration of Bishop John was administered by only two bishops, one of whom was uncanonically received into the Church and possessed questionable apostolic succession, the GOCA has become completely isolated from other Old Calendarist communities. A number of members of those communities issued condemnations immediately after his unjustified separation from the ROAC.
The GOCA currently has two bishops, 2 monastic communities, and 4 mission parishes in the United States, plus oversees 29 parishes in the Congo, Uganda, Brazil, Italy, and Bulgaria.
The jurisdiction is supported mainly by profits from the iconography and publishing work of its two monastic centers, Dormition Skete and Holy Apostles Convent, both in Buena Vista.



Greek Archbishop to proto-CIA: “Your directions will be executed faithfully.” (direct source) That was in 1942. The Greek Orthodox Church today is still faithfully executing CIA directions. Hence, all the gayness and wokeness.

The GOC is an old calendar group that rejects sergianism and the Moscow patriarch. I recently attended a liturgy and spoke to a priest who was formerly Rocor and who's wife had actually been baptized by Fr. Seraphim Rose. It was an awesome experience. And I hope to attend again. I have a lot of reading to do.

I listened to the whole thing - it's hard to see anything redeeming in the speech. It seemed like the goal was just to spend ten minutes representing the EP in a good light by secular standards, perhaps to bolster secular support for a Papal-lite vision of the EP within Orthodoxy.

As she has done in previous years, Presbytera Mari Iakovou Mars is enthusiastically, proudly and publicly celebrating and promoting homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer pride for LGBTQ Pride Month this year also.

On her Facebook page, on June 2, 2021 Mars wrote:

Mars is the wife of an active Orthodox priest in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOAA).

Mars, Presbytera Mari Marilisse, is married to Fr. Christos P. Mars who currently serves at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Atlanta, Georgia. Fr. Mars is a prominent Presbyter of the GOAA: he’s Vice-President of the Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy Syndesmos and President of the Atlanta Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood.

On June 3, 2021, Presbytera Mars followed up her Happy Pride message, with another Facebook post celebrating Pride Month. The rainbow graphic she shared publicly contained this message:

Coming from the wife of an Orthodox priest these posts are extremely inappropriate. They scandalize the Orthodox Church.

Mars is free to express herself in any manner she likes. But, she is also a Presbytera and holds a visible, privileged and influential leadership position within the Greek Orthodox church. When she repeatedly contradicts the Orthodox Church teachings and theology on human nature and biology, sexuality, sin, marriage and family, Mars makes a mockery of the Orthodox Church and the GOAA hierarchy.

Gail Sheppard, a frequent contributor to the Monomakhos blog, summarized the scandalous situation Presbytera Marilisse (Mari Iakovou Mars) has caused with her zealous support of LGBTQ ideas that defy the unchanging teaching of the Orthodox Church (see comments area):
It was scandalous because a woman, married to a priest in our Church, either knows next to nothing about the Orthodox Faith or has chosen to speak against it. That she is “nice” is immaterial. A lot of people are “nice.” But a Presbytera, at the very minimum, should be able and willing to support the Church.

It is NOT Church teaching:

(1) To define people by their struggle. One person’s struggle does not take more or less courage and strength than another’s.

(2) To be concerned with a person’s rights. We are taught to respect our civil authorities in all things, regardless of whether or not our “rights” are impinged upon.

(3) To be concerned with objectifying “discourse.” We are taught that like Christ, we will be humiliated, spit upon and called all manner of things. There are people in other parts of the world who are dying for the Faith. The words of this matushka should be reserved for them. Not people who choose to live a non-Christian lifestyle and flaunt it in a parade.

(4) To argue against celibacy when it concerns sex outside of marriage.

(5) To say that people should have complete control of their bodies. The Church teaches us that God created us man and woman and we are to honor that.

(6) To indicate we should have choices over the way we live. To be a Christian, there is but one choice: to accept and struggle toward leading a Christian lifestyle.

(7) To suggest one should have autonomy. We are taught when we enter the Church, we lose our autonomy to become part of the Body of Christ. Because our sin negatively impacts our brothers and sisters in Christ, we are expected to live our lives in a way that honors and serves others, not ourselves.

(8) To say there are no conditions, expectations or requirements. To live a sacramental life in the Church, there are many of both.


While her husband serves at the altar and she benefits from the honor, authority and influence that her status as Presbytera conveys, Mars willingly propagandizes the LGBTQ agenda and fuels outright rebellion inside the Orthodox Church. Her words and actions can sway many innocent and confused souls, particularly impressionable children, teenagers and young adults who trust and can be easily manipulated by those in positions of authority, especially the wife of an Orthodox priest.

Shamefully, all the GOAA bishops and metropolitans have ignored Presbytera Mars’ many scandalous comments and have never challenged or denounced her outrageous public posts. The entire hierarchy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America remains silent and complicit in this travesty, for the third year in a row.

Fr. Christos Mars was born and raised in Palos Hills, IL, a suburb of Chicago. He grew up in the Community of S.S. Constantine and Helen under the watchful eye of Fr. Byron Papanikolaou of blessed memory.

Upon completion of High School, Fr. Christos attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned his Bachelor’s degree in English. Upon graduation, Fr. Christos attended Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he earned his Master’s degree in Divinity in 2006. From 2006-2007, Fr. Christos completed his coursework for his second Master’s degree, this time in theology, specializing in liturgics.

While studying at the Seminary, Fr. Christos met and married Presbytera Marilisse, who was from Athens, Georgia, who was completing her undergraduate degree in Religious Studies from Hellenic College. They married on the feast day of St. Phanourios, August 27, 2006.

Fr. Christos was ordained to the Holy Diaconate on May 21, 2007 at his home parish of S.S. Constantine and Helen in Palos Hills, Illinois, and thirty three days later, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood, again at his home parish on the feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist, June 24, 2007.

Before coming to the Annunciation Cathedral in Atlanta, Fr. Christos served the parish of the Annunciation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Fr. Christos was given the Offikion (office) of Father Confessor by His Eminence Metropolitan ALEXIOS of Atlanta on November 14, 2010. He was also given the Offikion (office) of Sakellarios by His Eminence Metropolitan ALEXIOS of Atlanta on November 10, 2013. He is the Vice-President of the Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy Syndesmos as well as the President of the Atlanta Orthodox Clergy Brotherhood. He also currently chairs the Acolyte Training Committee and the Program for Continuing Education for Permanent Deacon as well as the Liturgical Text Committee for the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta as well as serving as liturgical chair for several Metropolis youth events. He is also a member of the Metropolis Council.

Fr. Christos and Presbytera Marilisse have one son, John, whom they were blessed to adopt.

When comments like this πρεσβυτέρα’s show up in this fashion, it’s not to shock as in “OMG I’m saying something that should shock faithful Orthodox Christians.”

No, it’s well past that.

It’s the challenge: “Yeah, this is what I’m saying out loud and this is what I believe. So what? Now whaddya gonna do about it?”

This πρεσβυτέρα probably knows well from her own experience that the answer will be an impotent “nothing at all.”

It’s the same thing when Time published that piece in February about how multiple forces colluded to prevent Trump from being reelected in November 2020. It wasn’t to shock people about what they did – it was rather to say, “Yeah, so what, now whaddya gonna do about it?”

Time and time again — whether it’s this πρεσβυτέρα in Atlanta or “Fr” Christopher Calin in Manhattan making the former Met. Leonty roll over in his grave if he were aware who’s now at his 2nd street cathedral — this “yeah, so what, now whaddya gonna do about it” stuff happens in American Orthodoxy a lot. Too much. The actors do it with impunity. Nothing ever happens to them.

Orthodoxy isn’t relative. We’re too absorbed in relative American style Protestantism to be aware of it many times. What priest has ever said at confession to a penitent, “well I suppose you’re not as bad as that guy over there.”

What’s appropriate social behavior for Orthodox Christians in Belgrade or Chios or St Petersburg is also appropriate social behavior in New York or Omaha or San Diego. It’s not relative.

If a priest’s wife shouldn’t say this stuff in Bucharest, then she shouldn’t say it in Atlanta.

Does she buy the leftist BS that Orthodox Christians will have blood on our hands from mass LGBTQQWERTY suicides if we don’t give affirmation in the LGBTQ-Trans behaviors that draw people away from God? Total garbage. But many fall for it.

Evidently she does buy this garbage. And she’s saying “Yeah so what?” Because she knows ain’t no one with any authority gonna call her on it. And embarrassingly, she’s right. Particularly not in the GOA or in the east/west coast OCA. Pathetic.

I don’t think shaming is ever a good option…. it’s my opinion that shaming is always uniformly toxic. Shaming, recall, is saying “you are a bad person” or “there is something wrong with you.” This is very different than saying “your behavior is wrong but we love you as a person.”

Most of us are hard-wired to reflexively resist shame and throw up walls to block it whenever our bodies sense it come in. Which is why shaming never works and is always toxic.

All this πρεσβυτέρα needs is for her husband’s bishop or for a handful of well-respected clergy in her husband’s diocese to come to her and say, rather dispassionately, “that sort of talk is not tolerated in our Church. If you fully believe this LGBTQwerty-trans stuff and need to scream it out loud, then being a πρεσβυτέρα in our Orthodox Church is not for you. After all, a πρεσβυτέρα is very much a leadership position.”

However, we know that it’s more likely to see a cow fly over the moon than for that to happen. It’s tragic. If this πρεσβυτέρα’s bishop or respected clergy in her diocese believe that they had something OF VALUE to PROTECT in their Church, then they would do this in a heartbeat. But they don’t, so with delusional, misguided “kindness”, they do nothing, and then this πρεσβυτέρα helps to bring the GOA closer and closer to becoming the ECUSA or PCUSA.

That’s why I fully believe that responsible, serious Orthodox Christians need to flee jurisdictions like the GOA. It will collapse before any serious *metanoia* at the Archdiocesan level will ever happen. Yes metanoia can always happen at the individual or small parish level, but the “movers and shakers” in charge of the large bureaucracy seem to enjoy their pseudo-influence too much.

Plus, the GOA has never been led by monastic hierarchs like the Russian Churches in America, who lead with humble humility and, frankly, lead just with love of Christ, His Mother, and the Saints. Think Metropolitan Anastassy, Metropolitan Anthony (Khrapovitsky), Metropolitan Leonty (Turkevich), Metropolitan Philaret. The closest the GOA ever got was Abp Iakovos, who was a good man but who got trounced by the globalists in C’ple.

The GOA is run like a business (and it shows). The Russian jurisdictions are run like Orthodox dioceses, which is why the OCA needs to return to its Russian roots, not emulate the Greek Archdiocese. As others have said, it’s clear as day that in a few years the GOA and C’ple will formally become the newest Uniates. The truth hurts sometimes, but there it is.

It’s far better to have painful truth than comfortable lies.

Time for this priest to step down. His wife’s misguided words and actions are evidently driven by her vain desire for publicity and self-promotion (note her mention of “clients”), with no regard for the beliefs of practicing Orthodox Christians in his diocese. If one does not share and fully believe in the precepts of a particular religion, by all means change to another. No reason exists to blatantly denigrate the beliefs of our faith in order to be “relevant” or “modern”. Many heresies were modern in their day. Also sad to be witnessing the normalization and promotion of psychological confusion.

IDK…What does this also say about Mari’s husband Fr. Christos Mars? His choice of mate/wife, his actions, lifestyle, choice of friends, beliefs/tolerances toward same public issue as the wife displays…Apple probably doesn’t fall far…

Our educational system has obviously failed in teaching everything across the board. I’m not sure Theology school is any better…We are all fallen to sinful nature…

Yet, what I don’t understand is why the GOAA continues to stay mum on everything social topic of importance? The church has lost the backbone and moral compass and teachings of Christ.

At this point, why bother even going to the GO church at all when the corrupt Archdiocese can’t even vet their own hiring and promoting Priests in general regardless of rank or position. And, when you become filled with ideas based in Theology instead of the Holy Spirit, you lose the ability to see what one can not see right in front.

Some may call what we are witnessing as a “revolution” of sorts, I’m seeing all of this as a REVIVAL. A CHRISTIAN REVIVAL! Don’t let Satan convince you that we are losing the war. When in fact, it’s just the opposite! We are called to pray and pray fervently for Christ to move in all circumstances and all mountains and valleys.

Lord Jesus, we submit to you with humility of what is beyond our control. Please forgive us for our sins and transgressions and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil trying to destroy life itself in this temporal fallen world in which we live.

Lord with the authority you have given each of us as Christian believers and disciples, we command the demonic evil forces ruling the current secular events taking place to be banished in Your holy name Jesus Christ.

Lord we continue to pray for the salvation of those unsaved and unknown to You that they may draw close to you no matter what circumstances. Lord we pray for all Christians who are being persecuted because of our faith and love in You. We are unworthy of the unmerited grace You have extended to us as the body of Christ yet, You will never forsake us. Lord with gratitude and love as Your humble servants we pray with praise to You, our Almighty King and Savior. Amen.

Mars and Marsette are a symptom of a larger problem and that is a celibate hierarchy. These seminarians are forced to marry in order to be ordained (or remain celibate and embrace sodomy) and, looking back through the years, scores of young priests have made bad decisions for themselves and their spouses.

Reform thoughts: Married clergy (even after ordination), those divorced properly can remarry, and a married hierarchy allowable.

You would have a much better echelon of clergy, period. And fewer Marsettes.

I am a devout follower of the Elder Paisios, whose basic tenet of deep humility is no way being followed by these “pride pushers.” Time for someone-somewhere to speak out–these flags violated our beliefs and the Elder’s teachings. We should read his books– and tune out those who are purging hundreds and thousands of people from church attendance. Let’s stay in church and speak out.
