So, I brought a bottle of turmeric supplements today.

Turmeric is supposed to be really good for you. It has crazy anti-inflammatory properties, it can help prevent Alzheimer’s and even cancer. Turmeric can also apparently lower estrogen levels in men and help with weight loss, which is the main reason I've decided to try it.

Have any of you guys tried supplementing with this stuff? I’ll report back with my results in a few weeks.

I've been taking Curcumin pills for years. It's the extracted form of turmeric. And it is one of the most potent natural herbs on this earth, a lot of studies have shown how it has many great health benefits, including anti-cancer as you mentioned. It's also a natural anti-depressant too. Anyway it has 100s of uses so just google to find out more.

There is one natural herb type of supplement that actually works in terms of increasing your testosterone levels. I can honestly say that it is about 50 percent as strong as testosterone injections, steroids. That is how powerful it is, and it's a natural mineral found in the Himalayas. Google "Shilajit" and buy that stuff. I recommend the Dabur brand as I've found it to work the best and also be very cheap. Find the regular version and you can get 100 pills for like 10 dollars. It's well worth it.

is there a brand that you recommend? does it include piperine or black pepper, or do you take that separately?

Turmeric/Curcumin supplements work great. I've been taking about 2,000-4,000 milligrams per day since I was hit from behind at a red light by an idiot to busy texting to look up and stop. The impact herniated the disc between my C5 & C6 vertebrae leaving me with chronic neck & back pain, muscle spasms, and tingling arms and hands. I tried the meds the doctors prescribed for a few months. Flexeril, a muscle relaxant, left me feeling groggy and constipated as hell all the time. The Voltaren, an NSAID anti-inflamatory, was so irritating to my stomach lining that it felt like swallowing a red hot coal after about 3 doses (1.5 days worth). Their treatment wasn't really helping at all and from a holistic view was making things worse.

I have had a passing interest in herbal remedies and vitamins for years so I got on Amazon and ordered a few books and started reading. That's how I found out about Turmeric. There are a lot of peer reviewed academic studies out there on the many benefits of Turmeric. The effects I was most interested in was it's effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory that rivals prescription grade NSAIDs like Voltaren without the nasty side effects of increased risk of heart attacks, cirrhosis of the liver that come with chronic use as well as nasty short term use side effects like ulcers, etc... I can tell you without a doubt that it works that way, for me. It has almost eliminated or reduced all of my symptoms to the level of minor discomfort and annoyances. I have had zero side effects from turmeric.

The stuff isn't that expensive if you shop around. I get mine at Costco for less than $25 per months supply. If you want to get your hands a little dirty you can encapsulate your own dirt cheap after getting the gear to make the capsules with. That hardware can run anywhere from about $30 - into the hundreds of dollars depending on how automated and easy you want it to be.

If you buy ready made turmeric/curcumin supplements make sure that you get one that includes black pepper aka. BioPerine. It greatly aids in the absorption of the herb into your body. I also take a garlic supplement with it as garlic greatly aids in the absorption of many substances as well. Be careful taking garlic supplements with prescription medications. You could inadvertently overdose on the prescription med because your body could absorb much more of the drug than usual when taken with garlic or black pepper. Never take any drugs or vitamins after eating grapefruit, grapefruit weight loss supplements, or calcium d-glucarate supplements. All of these substances will block your digestive system from absorbing pretty much anything else present in your gut.

Recently I discovered a new turmeric containing supplement that has greatly increased the anti-inflammatory/pain killing effects of the herb while allowing me to reduce my overall dosage. It's called Curamin. It's turmeric mixed with boswellia extract and bioperine. I take two a day along with two 750 milligram regular turmeric capsules and for the first time since my wreck I have no chronic pain in my neck. It still hurts a little from time to time especially when I do certain activities but it is nil most of the time. It's not cheap but it's cheaper than dealing with doctors, their prescriptions, and the side effects thereof.

YMMV.

I didn't know that garlic increases the absorption rate of chemicals. I read that there was some Chinese study done and it showed that even people who smoke cigarettes cut their risk of cancer in HALF just by eating fresh garlic twice a week. As I've been eating like 10 cloves a day for a week now, my breath smells like shit but I feel a lot of energy and really healthy. Garlic is another one of the best natural herbs you can eat for good health, the trick is to find a way to avoid the smelly breath.

Ten cloves a day? Seriously? Dude. Yeh, I bet you reek of garlic. Ease up a bit and switch to an aged garlic supplement that won't make you smell so bad you kill everything within 5 meters. The aged stuff is better for your heart and circulatory system. I wonder if you have a selenium deficiency that's causing you to crave it. Garlic and onions are naturally high in selenium.

My little brother would do stuff like that when he was 10 - 12. He would literally sweat garlic funk out of his pores when he'd go on a garlic or onion binge like that. It was repugnant.

ordered some from Vitacost.

looked at costco and a few other places.

odd thing is that a lot of the places have curiously labeled bottles. they claim 1,000 mg but the pills are only 500 mg and their label has a recommended serving of 2 tablets. so the bottle might have 100 tablets but you need to take 4 tablets to get 2,000 mg. Some folks recommend 3000 mg so you are going to need 2 bottles to last a month!

if it reduces chronic inflammation, arthritis, and is an anti-oxidant, its still a tremendous value. but I thought others would benefit.

curiously, this seems to be the labeling convention in the industry; its not just a one brand that labels this way.

like i said, i take in my morning smoothy. you can add it to some vegetables that you suatee or stews, but otherwise its hard to take regularly. also, you want to take it with regular pepper. pepper has an ingredient that makes the tumeric effective; the oover the counter supplements include this so if you take it natual then be sure to take pepper also

I bought a big bag of the largest empty capsules online. The biggest size are called Double 00. Vcaps. Gelatin capsules.

Then I put a huge amount of turmeric in a metal mixing bowl, poured in a ton of black pepper, mixed them up and put them together by hand.

In the morning after breakfast which is usually eggs and meat with lots of coconut oil, plus I pour some flaxseed oil over the top, I take my pills.

Best absorption is turmeric + black pepper + oils. Ive found it energizes me and keeps my shoulder and knee in good shape, both of which have had serious injuries and the shoulder had major surgery.

The other way is to cook with it but the flavor is very strong. I did broccoli stir fried with turmeric and pork stir fried with turmeric but again, its a strong bitter flavor. Pill it up with lots of pepper, take it with oily meals.

what ball said.

you can add it to things like stews, or maybe sauteed onions or scallions, things like that, but the flavor will change and its difficult to get enough, and even more difficult to get it every day this way and with black pepper.

its cheaper and generally better to take things in natural form but it would be very hard to take it consistently.

personally, i have been taking it for a few weeks then got off routine and have gone 2 weeks without any supplements. I have seen fewer aches and pains, although I still have frequent allergic responses to things like dust (which is a symptom of inflamation). So I am pleased, but I have also generally cut back significantly on wheat and alcohol. Need to get back in the groove of taking supplements..

Guys, just make a curry.

Fry onions, garlic, ginger, mix in the spices, sear the meat, add water and put in slow/pressure cooker.

Edit: Dahl is also the easier thing in the world to eat with turmeric.

Agreed, I remedy the potential teeth staining with a two step brushing process. 2 minutes of 1/4 spoon activated charcoal, then brush with dry toothpaste obtained from health shop, my teeth are amazingly white and have never done a professional cleaning etc.

As for the Tumeric in food, here in Europe the Mediterranean diet is law, When I make my salads, I make a type of vinaigrette of which is almond butter, turmeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, cinnamon and olive oil, it's delicious and health, have a go.

Careful with this supplement. It can stain teeth yellow and it like to stain around the gums. It required a heavy duty power washing/dental aqua pick to get it off. Ideally you brush around the gums soon after you take it.

easier to just add it to your food while cooking.

I doubt you all are cooking Indian or Asian foods, so for white food just add a bit to your meats or veggies or your rice while cooking.

This is a boss tip. I love eating tumeric in stir fries and suchlike but it turns anything it touches orange.

I went one step further and found 000 size capsules. Easy enough to fill with powder, and not terrible to swallow (come at me with the faggot jokes :gay: ) Will pick up some black pepper this afternoon and get the rest filled.

Pro tip: A workshop airline is ideal for 'dusting off' the capsules to make sure there's no orange dye lying in wait on the exteriors after filling.

I love cooking with Tumeric when I'm making Stews or Soups. I find it gives a thickness and texture to what I'm making that's quite good. I would highly recommend people experiment to which foods it adds actual taste or texture value, since it will go down a lot easier.

Warning though, soups and stews made with Tumeric will STAIN almost anything it touches, so be careful when you're eating and cooking it.

Thanks to this thread I've been throwing some raw turmeric in my green smoothies. I've learned so much about health from RVF.

A couple questions:
1) Would I be better off taking supplements with black pepper instead of putting it in my smoothie? I could also try putting black pepper in my smoothie but that seems disgusting.
2) How much turmeric should I put in my smoothie? I've been cutting off a chunk about the size of my thumbnail. I also put ginger in my smoothies and use about the size of my whole thumb for that.

I think its always best to take most things naturally, but tumeric needs pepper to be absorbed. That's fine for the occassional stew or sauteed onions, but not a green smoothie. Also, its hard to consume the same quantity, especially every day, since it has a strong flavor even without the pepper.

Here is a link to some supplements. The serving size is 2 tablets to get to 1160 mg., so this is really just a 30 day supply. About $11-15/month.

Tumeric Supplement with Pepperine

But if you are prone to chronic inflammation, this is a good insurance policy for your health especially if it allows you to forego acetiminophen or other toxic pain relievers.

Here is an article about why you should take tumeric with pepper:
