Just saw POD, AAF and Hoobastank in Manchester, UK. What a show

Haha good stuff bet that was fun. But are AAF and Hoobastank really true "Metal" bands? More like hard rock I'd say. Some of that POD stuff kicks used to love them (Southtown, Welcome to Hollywood, etc.).

Love Mastodon's "The Motherload" but the whole "controversy" about the video is lame (PC/feminist garbage about how the strippers in the video were somehow "exploited" or something):

Metal was what I listened to all through high school. These days, I am more into other stuff but I do revisit from time to time, mainly just classics. I like old school death metal (I have a lot of trouble getting into 'tech' and 'brutal' and 'slam' death metal), some old school black metal, a lot of thrash, NWOBHM-type stuff, doom metal, etc. I also like a lot of extreme punk, like crust, grindcore and powerviolence.

Lately I have been listening to a lot of the album Blutsabbath by Belphegor. I think it is their best work by far, replete with amazing riffs and thick with atmosphere but also nearly devoid of the cheese that dominates their later albums. Also been listening to a lot of In Battle There is No Law by Bolt Thrower, really the perfect intersection of crust punk and metal. This thread has reminded me I need to get back into Hellbastard and Hellkrusher... haven't listened to those guys in ages. I highly recommend Hellkrusher - Wasteland, it should appeal to metal fans as well even though it is more on the crust side, particularly if you like the old 90s Swedish death metal sound.

Gorguts's The Erosion of Sanity

Demigod's Slumber of Sullen Eyes

I prefer Considered Dead just slightly to Erosion of Sanity, but EoS is still a masterpiece, as is Slumber of Sullen Eyes, incredible album, there is nothing else like it (well there is, but not quite as good :D).

Any of you guys like Volbeat? They really have a knack for writing heavy riffs, but unfortunately their records get watered down with some country influenced/ballad type stuff. The songs they did with Barney from Napalm Death and King Diamond are probably their 2 best.

Huge death metal fan here (in addition to other metal genres as well). I went through a phase in high school where it was pretty much all I listened to. I remember going crazy when Napster and the like first came out, downloading just about anything I could get my hands on.

My all-time favorite DM album is Lykathea Aflame's Elvenefris. It is, simply put, an artistic masterpiece. Beauty and brutality effortlessly intertwined, as the intensity of death metal meets sublime Middle Eastern melodies amid lyrics of spiritual enlightenment. Drummer Thomas Corn also shows off some of the best drumming since Cryptopsy's Flo Mounier:

My other favorites:

Arsis's A Celebration of Guilt

Psycroptic's The Scepter of the Ancients

Atheist's Unquestionable Presence

Death's Human

Gorguts's The Erosion of Sanity

Demigod's Slumber of Sullen Eyes

Gorod's Neurotripsicks

Those are just off the top of my head; I've got a hard drive full of albums I could look through if y'all want any similar recommendations.

You just dropped a whole load of my personal favourites there. The Lykathea Aflame album is especially impressive, nothing else quite like it and it isn't exactly easy to get into for some. I liked it straight away but I can see how it might not "make sense" to some metal listeners. Its basically happy death metal to put it crudely. Very great stuff though.

Isaac, your taste in death metal is nearly identical to mine. Where are you from? Ha

Great minds...

Originally from Atlanta, GA. Not exactly a metal hotbed (Mastodon and Attila are the only two native groups that come to mind), but thanks to the internet that was never really a problem for me.

I was lucky in that I discovered The Metal Archives shortly after getting into metal. The site allows you to sort albums by rating, and I used to spend hours on Saturday mornings searching for albums with multiple perfect scores so as to not waste what little money I had back in high school on mediocre bands.

I remember scrolling through the list, getting to Lykathea Aflame, and seeing like 10 perfect scores for Elvenefris, which was incredibly rare on the site (we metalheads are incorrigibly picky). I ordered the CD that day, and played it so often I wore it out and had to order a new one two years later. One of my favorite albums, of any genre, to this day.

Any Devin Townsend fans here? Most metalheads are probably familiar with his Strapping Young Lad group, but he's put out a bunch of stuff under his own name, along with The Devin Townsend Band and Devin Townsend Project.

I'm a big SYL fan, but his other work is more progressive and melodic, while retaining that characteristic Devy intensity. Catchy AND crunchy. My favorite albums are all older ones: Accelerated Evolution, Ocean Machine: Biomech, Synchestra, Terria, and Physicist.

I'd link to "Earth Day", possibly my favorite song of his (off Terria), but at nine and a half minutes it isn't the most accessible. Here's my favorite off Physicist:

The first two Strapping albums are probably two of the most aggressive albums ever recorded. You can tell the dude was fucking pissed at the time and was a good enough musician to really capture that frustration and aggression.

Devy worked in the corner of the piss yard
Bored and plagued by pain,
Devy got a taste of the corporate community,
And never went back again.

Hey!

I worked for you fucking bastards
I worked for your fucking lies
I went and pissed away too may fucking opportunities
To try and make you fuckers feel right
And I fucking hate you...

I'm lucky that I got to see live them twice before they called it quits. I don't think I've ever went more than a few months without listening to City since I bought the album like 12 years ago.

I grew up mostly as a Nu-Metal guy(Which is unpopular with Metalheads, but I don't give a shit). Mostly Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and Deftones type stuff. But I also like Thrash stuff like Early Metallica, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies and Stoner Metal.

My favorite Deftones song.

I always thought the Deftones never really belonged in that category (I started listening to them not too long after Adrenaline came out), but they started to get popular around the same time as bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Static-X so they got lumped in with those bands and played some gigs on Ozzfest with other nu-metal bands at the time.

Especially if you listen to some of their newer albums like Saturday Night Wrist and Koi No Yokan it doesn't really sound nu-metal at all. Their big hit that put them into the mainstream "change" is actually a fairly slow atmospheric song... not very nu-metal. They really do have their own distinct sound.

Can you picture any of those other bands writing a song like Cherry Waves?

To be honest, I didn't expect anyone here to know about Demigod. Most of the metalheads I meet do not even know who Demigod is. Anyhow, for anyone that likes Demigod, you should check Adramelech.

They also hail from the some country as Demigod, Finland. I also think that the some of the former members of Demigod founded or played in Adramelech or vice versa. However, I am not too sure about that. Nonetheless, they are the only band that I know of that has a similar style to Demigod. Their albums Psychostasia and Pure Blood Doom are really good, and should be checked out by anyone who likes Demigod or death metal in general.

Also, how many of you guys are fans of old school death metal (late 80's - early 90's)? Old school death metal is probably my favorite genre in metal, with thrash/speed a close second.

Also, I can't believe that Bathory hasn't been mentioned yet. RIP Quarthon.

Thank you. I forgot to add Motorhead, Sacred Reich, Megadeth, DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Mercyful Fate, some King Diamond to my list if that makes a difference. I guess thrash and punk that crossed over into the thrash genre. I like metal bands with their own sound but so many sound like thousands of other bands....

Are MOD any good? I think its the same fat singer from SOD but without Scott Ian on guitar? Exodus? Venom? Random bands that I have heard about but never researched and listened to.

Did a search for a metal thread, but didn't find one, so excuse me if there is one already. Forum needs some metal discussion.

Here is a link to a new High On Fire song. For those of you marvelous metal fans that haven't heard HOF, you need to get on that shit. All killer, no filler throughout their entire career.

https://soundcloud.com/eone-music/hoftheblackplot/s-J12yh

Get on some Sleep while you're at it. Sleep is Matt's band pre-HOF.

Tim Ferriss has also done a podcast with Rick Rubin. By far the greatest producer of all time. Yeah, he's produced a lot of questionable shit, but he produced Reign In Blood, aka the greatest album of all time. So much respect.

Enjoy!
Good Song by HOF. Not a big fan, but I enjoy some of their stuff. IMO it's the perfect mix between old school heavy metal and the newschool.

He is talking about the majority of the "Big 4" and you no mention of Testament, Kreator, Sodom and Destruction? Or Overkill? tsktsktsk
Exodus I just like the Bonded By Blood. The last three Overkill albuns are quite good.

All being said: For me Heavy metal is like women. I love most of them, but some I just can't stand.
I listen to everything, from "gay" power metal of true brothers of steel, to death and black metal. I abstain from everything that has an "extreme" label such as extreme death metal or grindcore.

My favorite band is, as you may see by my avatar Judas Priest. With Rob, with Ripper and with Richie. Also love the usual ones, such as Maiden, Accept, Dio, Black Sabbath (without Ozzy), King Diamond and Marcyful Fate, Manilla Road, Death, Immortal, Iced Earth, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Korpiklaani... the list goes on and is never endless.

Im leaving you now with some Portuguese heavy metal:
Midnight Priest's first album. Sung in portuguese, very king diamondesque.

And their second, new, album. Sung in english, more like the recent new wave of heavy metal.

Like a bananahead, I forgot to mention Evile in the original post. Ah doy! Anyway, the best way I could describe them is total Slayer worship without sounding like Slayer clones. Really really damn good band. Especially the first record, Enter The Grave.

Haven't listened to MOD, so can't help you there. Exodus are good, pretty much a staple Bay Area thrash band. Venom's early stuff is good, but I haven't listened to anything after the first three albums. You should also check out Hellhammer and Bathory.

Although I don't listen to a huge amount of BM (props to whoever mentioned Antaeus earlier, btw), I fucking love these guys:

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/False/3540332204

You need to be careful looking for their stuff, as there are two bands called False. The self titled EP is crazy good. For those that are interested, you'll probably have an easier time looking for 'The Key of Passing Suffering' which is one of the tracks from the EP. Also, Funeral Mist. These guys absolutely blew me away when I first heard the Salvation album, so crazy.

So bands that I like also, that are more fast hardcore than metal are: Massgrav, Krigshot, Charles Bronson, Brody's Militia, Widespread Bloodshed, Lack of Interest (my favourite powerviolence band), Gadget, Hellnation, Infest, Insect Warfare, Short Hate Temper (especially their split LP with Slight Slappers), What Happens Next, Spazz.

I miss the 90's, lol.

Finnish death metal is great. Seems to have a bit more insanity or weirdness to it than American or other Scandi death metal. Another great Finnish band is Demilich

and the old Sentenced stuff, which is more like Swedish melodic death metal but with a shot of the Finnish madness and a bit of Atheist's technicality. sounds a lot like Children Of Bodom thought it came first and is IMO a million times better (i can't stand COB myself aside from their excellent demo as Inearthed and maybe some of the first record)

Two bands that might fit along these lines with similar names, one from Houston, Texas and one from Fullerton, California. Both are kind of on the periphery of punk/metal like Suicidal Tendencies, but these are great albums. I definitely feel like these guys along with Gang Green were probably the main influences for Municipal Waste.

Nespithe is a great album filled with word puzzles "the spine." I think the band has a site where you can legally download high quality audio files of all of their material for free... or at least they used to, I can't find it at the moment, maybe someone can help me. I think this might be it: http://www.anentity.com/demilich/download.php

Nespithe means "The Spine" and Erecshyrinol means "No Lyrics Here". They can be decrypted by grouping the letters in three, starting at the end of the word, and reversing the order of those groups.
