Many good suggestions here.

But apart from one poster who linked to Ensiferum and another who manifested his surprise to the omission of Bathory, no one mentioned FOLK METAL.

Maybe it's not as popular in the US as it in the Europe ?

I love folk music (celtc, medieval, Slavic...) as well as Metal (Thrash, black, gothic..) and when the two genres are mixed together, the result is ear-orgasmic.

As most of you are from North America, check out this US band called AGALLOCH. They play progressive Metal but with Folk influences.

Finnish death metal is great. Seems to have a bit more insanity or weirdness to it than American or other Scandi death metal. Another great Finnish band is Demilich

and the old Sentenced stuff, which is more like Swedish melodic death metal but with a shot of the Finnish madness and a bit of Atheist's technicality. sounds a lot like Children Of Bodom thought it came first and is IMO a million times better (i can't stand COB myself aside from their excellent demo as Inearthed and maybe some of the first record)

Demilich is a great band - they have a very unique style.

I haven't listened to Sentenced that much. From what I remember from their first album, it had a doom metal influence, which I didn't like. However, the song you posted was quite good, so I will give them another try.

@ Vitriol
I really like DRI. They were a massive influence on Slayer, in particular on Reign in Blood.

Lots of great stuff mentioned already and some good new ones also I'm discovering. I'll listen to uptempo anything.

It definitely is not, but Fintroll is one of my Pandora stations and Amon Amarth gets an honorable mention. One of the old Limewire discoveries. An acquired taste but worth a listen.

On a completely different note, my all time favorite metal song is by the yet unmentioned "The Crown" with the "At The Gates" vocalist for an album. Crushing speed metal (55 seconds in):

Classic thrash is great (Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, etc.)
I also dig progressive metal (Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Dream Theater, Cynic, Haken, Vanden Plas, Circus Maximus, etc.).
Technical death metal (Atheist, Death, Gorguts, etc.).

I've recently gravitated towards a lot of post-metal and experimental stuff. Any Pelican or Meshuggah fans? Check them out in addition to a newer band called Sannhet (post rock/metal).

This is album is the soundtrack to swallowing the red pill:

Drown In Ashes

I drown in ashes you've enshrined.
Of blissful days long gone by.
Concealed behind my dying eyes.
This hell of anger and weary lies.
A frame of mind, a dismal soul.
My final womb, this flesh turned cold.
You held me down and let me bleed.
My love, it died, along with me.
A world of scars and caresses pale.
And thoughts as chaste as pristine dew.
And flowers placed across your face.
I trace the life I've lost with you.
This bleakest pit that you've unveiled.
I hate to love as it is pain.
My hands are cut but I still sail.
An ocean of sadness in the rain.
My flesh, my blood.
My wound, my cry.
My broken back, my all now dies.
My soul, my tomb.
My pain, my joy.
My darkest mind, my love destroyed.

^... in other words an attempt to reconcile beta male conditioning with reality.

Os Abysmi Vel Daath

A pallid sun sheds dimmest glow.
On mute and pallid soil.
I am the one, a life long gone.
A refuge raped in search of life.
Like a shadow on this earth.
In embraces pale as human flesh.
I am unborn, and I'm undone.
How much of me is lost.
I deny my own desire.
Lying one among the liars.
I deny my own desire.
Dark in darkness I can see.
Nothingness is blinding me.
Os abysmi.
I'm drowning in this sea.
For those I loved I hurt.
So you taketh from me.
My name untold and numb.
Where I am there is no thing.
No God, no me, no inbetween.

Any forum members gonna be at Heavy Montreal festival? It's the same weekend as Roosh's world tour so I might pay that a visit as well. As long as I don't miss Alexisonfire's reunion show of course ;)

The selkies solo may be the GOAT of guitar solos. Waggoner is a beast. From about 12-17 I never listened to anything other than metal. It's thoroughly influenced my writing style and taste, and I still love it dearly.

Seen some great recommendations in this thread. Many of my favourite bands have been posted. My personal recommendations:

Opeth, between the buried and me, death, cynic, protest the hero, children of bodom, trivium, arch enemy, cavalera conspiracy, sepultura, animals as leaders, scale the summit, slayer, exodus, metallica, megadeth, agalloch, born of osiris, meshuggah, tool, korn, slipknot, bring me the horizon, the acacia strain, job for a cowboy, carcass, dream on dreamer, periphery, dream theatre, a7x, atreyu, necrophagist, breaking Benjamin, cradle of filth, august burns red, parkway drive

I could probably keep writing for the next week and there would still be bands I missed but if there are any bands there you haven't listened to you should definitely do so

There's a somewhat thriving hardcore scene in aus, particularly in my part since there's fuck all else to do, so there are tons of really talented musicians going around. It's a shame no bigger bands really come here anymore - we've systematically removed the very few metal events that regularly came here and were so far away from everything and outrageously expensive that most won't actually come here for anything other than a huge festival.

If any of you know who miles away are, my band opened for them on the first show of their recent reunion tour

I listen to a lot of folk metal like Korpiklaani, Tyr, Ensiferum, Turisas, etc and that's been mostly what my metal which isn't hardcore by most peoples' metric but for whatever reason can't go into other types of metal. But today I listened to a band called Powerwolf and they're pretty good (and there singer is not bad at all either), here's one of their songs I like the most.

I'm on a hunt for bands like this so if anyone knows of such a thing I'd be more than grateful to hear recommendations!

All being said: For me Heavy metal is like women. I love most of them, but some I just can't stand.
I listen to everything, from "gay" power metal of true brothers of steel, to death and black metal. I abstain from everything that has an "extreme" label such as extreme death metal or grindcore.

My favorite band is, as you may see by my avatar Judas Priest. With Rob, with Ripper and with Richie. Also love the usual ones, such as Maiden, Accept, Dio, Black Sabbath (without Ozzy), King Diamond and Marcyful Fate, Manilla Road, Death, Immortal, Iced Earth, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Korpiklaani... the list goes on and is never endless.

Im leaving you now with some Portuguese heavy metal:
Midnight Priest's first album. Sung in portuguese, very king diamondesque.

And their second, new, album. Sung in english, more like the recent new wave of heavy metal.

I'm a big classic metal head too (been into metal since the 1970's). Have you heard the latest Priest album?? It's brilliant, their best since the early 80's in my opinion. Got tickets to see them in the UK this year!:idea::idea::idea::idea::idea:

At first I disliked it, mostly due to production and sound output. Then I realized I was being a cunt. It's a great album! Even the extra tracks are awesome.

Cool thread. Does anyone have some recommendations for black metal? I recently discovered Behemoth and really liked it.

Check out Dimmu Borgir. Stand out albums:

Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia

Death Cult Armageddon

Also, if you want to check out more classic/traditional style black metal then listen to Immortal, Emperor, Satyricon, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral.
