I blame sex in the city. Women love that show, and some even see it as a guide to life. Has 2wycked already done a writeup on it? That show has probably set women in america back 50 years, hell maybe a hundred.
Let's look at the main characters.
Carrie: Every time she breaks up with a boyfriend, she maxes out her credit cards buying high end shoes and clothing(mostly designer shoes). Sometimes she will buy a hundred dollar piece of furniture that she thinks is ugly because the guy selling it, she thinks he is cute and wants an excuse to talk to him. Women see this sort of thing, and think "hey wow, when I am upset or emotional, I do this too- I spend money I don't have buying shit that I don't need or want to make myself feel better, I am so glad I am like Carrie!"
Samantha: The slut of the group. If she encounters a man she thinks is attractive physically, she will immediately fuck him whether it is the UPS guy delivering a package or a mechanic changing her oil on her car. She is some sort of company executive and extremely confident and portrayed as a leader and a role model. Women watch this and can't help but think "I wish I was empowered like Samantha and could fuck so many guys, she's so brave!"
Miranda. She is probably the character that bothers me the least. She doesn't treat men very well initially, rejecting good men for bad reasons. Ultimately, she does the right thing when her boyfriend reforms his playboy ways to be a boyfriend and father to their children, after initially rebuking him.
Charlotte- Attractive and marriage minded. Plays a good girl but is probably just as big of a slut as Samantha when it suits her. My favorite part in the series is when she is dating her divorce lawyer after her divorce and she converts to judaism so he will date her, yet in a moment of frustration she says "when people see us together, they think how lucky you are"(he isn't the best looking guy) and his response is "wow I knew some people thought that, but I didn't think you were one of them, I really dodged a bullet here. Bye! And to think I bought a ring" and he leaves her. Of course they later reconcile and get married. She is shallow, and convinced that it is OK to treat men poorly when it suits her, and this seems to be justified because they keep marrying her after she fucks up.
All of them love to dine out and eat high caloric food including gourmet cupcakes but none of them ever exercise(or gain weight). Again the message is telling women they should enjoy the best and they will still be thin and beautiful and desirable to men. And here we have a generation of fat and entitled women who treat men badly and insist that they deserve the best. I blame this show for setting women back 50 years. The show isn't fresh in my mind, I probably haven't seen it in ten years.
The writing is funny, the pacing is economical, they pack a lot into each 20 minute episode. But ultimately, it is probably represents the hamster on steroids that is the collective conscious of women in the USA. We have a generation of women that behave poorly and see nothing wrong with it.
I have barely scratched the surface, to really do a write-up like this justice, I would have to sit down and watch the series again and pick it apart. I just figured 2wycked already did something like this or had it in the works? I also blame modern shows like
twilight as well.
I am putting this rant in this thread because your thread is about women who have the nicest things but maxed out credit cards. They see nothing wrong with it.
