How to deal with academic dishonesty?

I figured this little situation would make for an amusing forum thread, and I'd like to see what kind of creative answers the forum can generate:

Situation - Lets say you're in college and another student finds out that you took a class last year that he's currently taking. He then proceeds to push you for your answers to the midterm, which you happen to have. Furthermore, he says that he can recommend you to his manager for a good job as incentive for your helping him. How do you respond?

Extra Qualifiers:
The guy asking you is a member of an ethnic group known for cheating on tests.

You dislike this person and he's in a project group with you for another class. So far he's been an incompetent group member.

If you liked the dude then it really just comes down to your morals on cheating. Since you don't like him, your response seems pretty clear. "Sorry, don't have the answers". Or if he knows you have them "Sorry, I'm not comfortable doing that."

If you truly believe in and adhere to the principle of academic integrity, then does it matter what he promises you, which ethnic group he is from, and whether you personally like him or not? No. Simply refuse him.

If you are not in rigid adherence to such a principle, and decide whether to help him based on whether you like him personally, then you are just acting on emotions.

But if you decide to be a ruthless, calculating pragmatist, then personal dislike or ethnicity doesn't matter either; it depends on how much you need the job that he recommends, what other benefit you can reliably derive from him despite or precisely because of his competence. If you see that he can be exploited and worth exploiting, then co-operate with him, sign some sort of contract/establish some kind of binding conditions to ensure that he keeps his promise, use him as a stepping stone to establish more connections, etc.

Why would you help someone without something in return? It's a dog eat dog world. You want to maintain your competitive advantage.

Why would you trust him when he says he could get you a cushy job for helping him on a test? The sounds like an egregiously outrageous reward for helping someone with a test.

Let him get you the job first then give him the wrong answers :D

Interesting. I assumed the job recommendation was a worthless bribe attempt, since I had no reason to believe that he would actually follow through, or that his manager would listen to his recommendation.

Another major deterrent against giving him the answers was the ethnicity element: mainly that being a non-native speaker massively increased the odds that he would copy answers verbatim which would make the cheating traceable.

Your reaction was similar to mine: There's no reason to believe the word of a guy who's going to ask for help cheating on tests. I would've told him to GTFO.

Also, he has to go back.

OK let's do it:

Tell me which ethnic group is most known for cheating on tests.

Please include charts and graphs and whatnot.

Aloha!

Belgians.

But seriously, I should have said certain nationalities of foreign exchange students with such a reputation. I'm sorry I did a racism.

Have him get you the job first before you hand over the answers.

Most likely won't happen.

Was it seriously Belgians?

I was thinking it was China. Chinese are legendary for cheating on tests in Cali.

Chinese and Indian foreign exchange students are consummate cheaters and colluders in American colleges. To some degree I can sympathize given that if I had to take a computer science class in Chinese I'd be fucked up the ass, but then again the whole situation just makes the degree worth its weight in shit if you can pass without understanding the language it was taught in, so fuck em.

Women and Gender Studies 101 midterm? Tell him to write in "All men are rapists" for each question. Recognizing his privilege should net some extra credit as well.

Also, take some time for self-reflection as not everyone is cut out to become a Sandwich Artist™. Never dive into a new career without fully understanding the responsibilities of such a prestigious title.

I learned after a while that it is sink or swim with school. I learned that more people than not chest and have systems were to hack the system. I learned not give s fuck anymore and to get whatever you can via whatever methods you can. Trust me. Nobody will give a fuck how you earned your grade.

This is what I learned goes down:

* Hierarchy legacy system. Certain groups like Jews or some Chinese clicks will purposefully take the same programs, courses, etc and just pass down materials, answers, essays, etc down the line. Nobody goes into anything blind.

* USB stick can be found or bought with full information on certain courses. You can literally build a whole minor by digging around and finding what material you find the most helpful and then just picking the courses from the various folders

* Bibles or guides that get passed down with answer keys and case studies from the professors.

* For women... Fucking an upper year and getting him to do all your work.

* For women.. flirting with a beta and getting him to do all your work.

* For women.. fucking your professor and getting him to mark all your work highly (you notice a trend here).

* Old school.. tape a sheet of paper with answers to upper theigh and then go take a shit during your exam and then just read your notes off your leg.

I can promise folks that all above happens more than many think. School has become a joke and if you don't treat it like life where you have to get grimy you might just get lost in the noise.

I am not advocating cheating. I am just highlighting how rampant the fraud is and the blunt reality that nobody gives a fuck how you get your grade.

Belgians, seriously?

Btw, question for you guys that went on college; how is cheating looked upon? Is it common among students, how does professor deal with it, what are his/hers precautions against it?

Here in Croatia, I know students that cheated half of their education. To clarify, for example in order to have properly "cleaned" first year of college, you must pass all of the 10,12,13 (varies from college to college)... exams. There are lot of guys that cheated on at least 6,7 exams. And that is just first year! So in the course of education, over 5 years, some people cheat on 35 exams!

If there's one thing I've learned from RVF it's this: never trust a Belgian. Seriously, screw those guys with their pommes frites and their waffles.

Fair enough, I take it back. Trappist beer makes up for a lot.

How do I deal with academic dishonesty? I profit from it: I'd ask for at least $500.00. If you didn't like him, change some of the answer and when he fails say: "I guess professor changed some of the questions since last semester."

Cheating in college is rampant. If you say "no" he'll go ask the next person.
