How to deal with academic dishonesty?

Inform him that by asking you these things he has sullied your honour and put in jeopardy the reputation of your beloved educational institution. Slap him with a glove and inform him that he is to attend the courtyard at dawn. Advise him to finalise his affairs and that he may bring a witness and pistol of his own, but if he has none then you will provide one.

What weak professor uses the same test every semester? Just tell him you don't remember the specific questions and didn't keep your exam paper. End of.

Did anyone else's fraternity have a test database? We had people scan in their papers with the professor's name, the class and which test it was to make it easy to search. Sweet system. The questions were rarely exactly the same but it helped you know which areas to focus on. Since I left, they've started doing the same with essays and research papers.

My guess was Chinese. Just based on my personal experience and that these people need the grades since they get no AA points. I don't see any of it in moral terms anymore. Academia is a dog eat dog, sink or swim world now with everyone piled on with debt up to their eye balls.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It's a bold claim this guy is making. I'm not sure I can trust him. Plus a recommendation is meaningless if it doesn't get you the job. The fair deal is just ask for 50-100 bucks and call it a day or flip for it. If I understood you correctly, you said he wanted the answers to the midterm, so basically he has the questions in his possession but is too fucking dumb to figure out answers with the aid of textbooks? What subject is this?

I used to write essays for rich UAE Master's students for cash. They paid generously and they were the one's being dishonest/cheating, I was merely surviving off it, this was not a moral issue for me. I was from a poor family with nobody helping me so yeah desperate times call for desperate measures. Ive read about of women spreading the legs in college to get by, what I did was somewhat upstream I guess..

Pistols are for pussies like Chinese. Bring a fucking longsword, show up in full plate armor er I mean suit, and "end him rightly".

“ If you wish to end him rightly[1], hold your sword up on your arm. You must unscrew the pommel and throw it at him vigorously. Close in with the throw and use your sword at him. ”

The guy asking you is a member of an ethnic group known for cheating on tests.

You dislike this person and he's in a project group with you for another class. So far he's been an incompetent group member.

So Indian?

Make him pay you if you decide to give him the answers. Don't listen to any BS about a job recommendation. Could be legit, but most likely isn't. Cash is always legit.

Remember how you could put in math equations into your TI-82 calculator? I used to do that shit all the time.

Do kids these days even need those graphing calculators?

If there's one thing I've learned from RVF it's this: never trust a Belgian. Seriously, screw those guys with their pommes frites and their waffles.

I dunno, man. They have some mighty fine beer...

Fair enough, I take it back. Trappist beer makes up for a lot.

And mussels. In wine and cream sauce

My ex fling hung out with members of another international Asian student group also notorious for cheating (not Chinese). OP, when I read this thread after reading your description of the guy I immediately thought:

If you give him the questions, he's going to share the questions with every other member of his group and also with all of the chicks he thinks are hot enough to bang.

If you're uncomfortable with this and I would be uncomfortable taking risks so a dude can create social currency for himself, then you shouldn't.

That said, responsible professors ought to change their exam questions every year and make prior exams available to the students.

I'm sitting in a Belgian restaurant eating pomme frites right now. You're right! These people are sketchy as hell. Almost as bad as Minnesota Lutherans

On a more serious note, I consider previous tests a legit study material. Normally, the professors in my highly ranked engineering program would write new tests each semester, and hand out old tests as study material. The older tests were widely available anyway. My friends and I would drill on these problems, and on some of the tougher homework problems from the book, until we could crank out the answers with no delay. This is my recommended study method for any current students.

It's well known that previous tests are available. The OP should be using these himself for every test. The professors have to make new tests everytime. The lazy fucks. It's what they're paid to do.

Just in case its not clear, I'm completely serious and this is 100% legit. Don't know why everyone else hasn't said the same thing.

If the teachers don't change the test everytime, then they deserve to be fired.
I'm not Mr. Goodytwoshoes myself, I have cheated in academic situations, but at least I had the dignity to prepare my own cheat sheets.

BTW, OP, what is the subject of the test?

It's an operating systems class. The format of the class is that you get a couple papers to read each week plus a project (writing a thread scheduler in C although the instructions basically walk you through it). The tests are 100% of your grade though and they're just short answer questions on the readings and project.

He lets you type the answers on a laptop and email them during the test and its on the honor system for you not to furtively google the answers. So realistically the only need to crib answers would be if you didn't bother to do the classwork at all and you're so out of your element that you can't even google your way to good answers in the time given.

Given this guy's apparent laziness and stupidity in the group we're in together I wouldn't put it past him to not have done the project. And he'd most likely direct copy my answers (potentially even if they don't match the questions, I only have my answers, not a copy of the test itself). Which would be an unacceptable risk to me since the professor himself has a copy of my answers he can easily compare if he notices.

The actual outcome of the situation wasn't all that exciting. When he first asked me for the answers I just sent him a short email with some general pointers towards what to study (nothing that he couldn't have gotten by asking the prof the right questions). Then when he wanted to meet up to "study", which I assume was a last ditch attempt to get a look at my answers, I just evaded. I don't intend to turn him in unless he really pisses me off with something else (like bugging me for the final answers excessively), since frankly I'm not vindictive enough to send someone through an academic kangaroo court.

The reason I posted in the first place was that I was curious how people would react to the situation. And the range of responses was actually quite interesting. For example, my mother was fixated on the risk that this guy would somehow turn it back on me if I turned him in, basically that taking a moral stance wasn't worth even the most remote potential threat to oneself. Other folks just recommended doing nothing on the grounds that it wasn't worth the hassle I'd incur in the process.

One friend of mine actually came up with a clever solution that would leave me anonymous and fuck the cheater in the ass totally: Supply him with a set of fake answers and then email that same set of fake answers to the professor anonymously. Of course writing fake answers would involve spending effort, so like I said not worthwhile unless I was more vindictive.

Considering that he didn't contribute to your mutual project, let him drown. You might lose what he has to offer (if he really intended to give it in the first place) but you win in dignity and honesty.

Just for fun, you could tell him that you wont give him what he wants unless he blows you.

Either it's going to go one of two ways. He refuses and that's that.

Or he concedes, at which point you tell him "you disgust me, you degenerate", and you can be sure he's not EVER going to mention what happened to anyone else.

Either way he's off your back.

I'd probably just give the guy the answers. Then he owes you one! Maybe you'll get a new friend, maybe a new job - you never know. You really have nothing to lose. When I was in college, this awkward dude hooked me up with test answers and you know what...I invited him to every party I went to myself...and helped him to hook up with a girl! Over a decade now I don't even remember what that class was about, but I remember the guy and if I met him today I'd treat him to some Belgian beer! I don't about Chinese though..
