How to set up Element Messenger properly?

I finally installed Element yesterday and bullied my wife into installing it too :laughter:

Huge disappointment so far.

Both of us can't access messages of each other in our private chat. If I click on the blocked message I get the following warning:

"Due to end-to-end encryption, you might need to wait for someone's message to arrive because the encryption keys were not properly sent to you."

That's nice but it doesn't help at all. Should I sit and "wait for someone's message to arrive"?

As to my account preferences, I didn't change anything. My cross-signing is enabled and I have a green checkmark, so my session is verified.

Any suggestions?

I'd start by asking if perhaps you would not prefer Jami or xmpp (conversations) to make things easier, also seems more appropriate for the use case.

thanks but I have limited energy for convincing my wife to try any "weird" app. I'd end up being the only person using it so I don't care about the alternative xyz.

Why would you convince her to do it? Do it for yourself then for her, you'll see how it works and then show her. The whole convincing idea is counter productive, especially with wahmen. Just download Jami play with it for 1-3 minutes and you will understand. I would recommend using aurora store instead of play store, it doesn't require google account and you can access F-Droid FOSS apps.

Could you read the messages the first time but on logging out and logging a subsequent time found that they were lost?

I use it more for audio and video so am usually reassured for privacy reasons if a message turns to dust due to missing keys.

One thing I can say for sure from personal experience and reading through their Github issues and discussions on hacker news, the product they have for different platforms is at different levels of development. I think the desktop clients are more developed than the mobile clients. Element / matrix is definitely not without bugs and I have observed and reported some horrendous ones.

Now they try to make you sign in with Google, Facebook or Apple wtf. Anyway, "try", it doesn't force you, but the main server matrix.org insists on having an email address. Others servers leave you to be totally anonymous:

So tip to end the suffering might be to try it on desktops. The other thing is there is a box somewhere you may need to untick "accept unverified sessions" or something like that. When it works, it's fanstastic, but sometimes at the start it can be buggy.

Element is a great replacement of IRC for chatting groups. But for 1-1 chatting it's still subpar it was rather buggy when I tried it on my android. Issues with notifications, ringtones, and moving my account to another phone.

Yeah, I noticed that already. When I created a group chat I suddenly could read my wife's messages, but unfortunately she still can't read mine.
