Japan Eases Immigration Rules for Foreign Workers

Japan eases immigration rules for workers

Japan's parliament has approved a controversial new law allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners into the country to ease labour shortages.

From next April foreigners will be allowed to take up jobs in sectors such construction, farming and nursing.

Japan has traditionally been wary of immigration but the government says more foreigners are needed because of Japan's ageing population.

Opposition parties say the law risks exposing newcomers to exploitation.

Under the new system, more than 300,000 foreigners could be allowed to work in sectors facing a labour crunch.

The law creates two new visa categories. Workers in the first category will be allowed in for five years if they have a certain level of skill and some proficiency in Japanese.

Workers with a higher level of skills would qualify for the second visa category and would eventually be allowed to apply for residency.

The opposition has argued that an influx of foreign workers would depress wages and lead to exploitation of migrant labour.

The BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo says the current programme of "technical training" for low-skilled foreign workers is open to abuse by unscrupulous employers.

Businesses in Japan have long argued for changes to immigration rules to recruit workers from other countries.

But Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stressed the proposed law is not an overhaul of immigration policy and Japan will only accept foreigners "who have specific skills and can work immediately to address serious labour shortages, only in sectors that genuinely need them".

Japan's fertility rate dropped below 2.1 childbirths per woman - replacement level - in the 1970s and now stands at around 1.4. The country also has one of the world's longest life expectancies (85.5).

What do you guys think of this? I'm not on board with this - Japan has a very unique culture and I feel that this could destroy it.

They'd be OK if they gradually let in a total of 5% to 10% of younger northern Chinese and Korean immigrants, 60-40 female to male ratio. More than this would alter the national character, because Japan is a very small and overcrowded country, it can easily get by with a population of 60M-70M instead of the current 125M.

They can also bring in a million or two Pinoy nurses on temporary visas to take care of their elderly, they'd be a lot happier there than in places like Saudi Arabia.

I'm absolutely against this. Bad move by Japan. Japan's population is aging, so they need to import more foreign workers to what, raise the GDP, or take care of the elderly? Because I think taking care of the elderly won't be a problem.

This quote says all I need to know:

Businesses in Japan have long argued for changes to immigration rules to recruit workers from other countries.

This is about the almighty GDP, plain and simple, as if that is the end all be all of a nation.

They need to protect their culture, their people and their way of life first and foremost. Japan needs no more white people, sorry, we gotta go back. I don't give a shit how many white guys on this forum want to talk about "muh integration", no, screw that. Japan does not need whites, blacks, hispanics, other Asians and it damn sure doesn't need any Muslims coming into their country. I mentioned whites first and foremost because if you go to the military bases over there like Okinawa , tell me how the majority white American demographics have contributed positively to the Japanese culture of Okinawa. Hint: They haven't.

This immigration crap is always about the business elites and never about the people. Always about the GDP. Let me be clear: As a white man, I would rather live in a white/European shithole than live in an Asian utopia or a black Wakanda. I feel more comfortable being around people with the same background and who look like me. I know other Asians (including the Japanese) feel the same way, as do the Africans and Hispanics.

Want to know how I know? Walk down any neighborhood in any big city where there's a decent sampling of different races, ethnicities and/or religions tell me what you notice about the neighborhoods. From the Americas to Europe to Asia to Africa, go ahead, tell me what housing trends you see. The average Japanese person does not want ghetto's and ethnic enclaves forming in their country, it never ends well.

If this passes, the Japanese people have been played for fools. The Japs can come back from any kind of economic hardship, hell just look at what they've accomplished post World War Two. But if whites, blacks, hispanics and other Asian groups start swarming into the country, Japan becomes just another globo-homo shithole like the rest of the "vibrant" cosmopolitans of the world.

Don't do it Japs. Don't sell your souls to the devil, it's not worth it. The snake always comes back to bite you in the ass, always!

You were supposed to destroy the HomoGlobos, not join them!
You were supposed to bring Robots to the workforce, not leave it with foreigners !

Wasn't this essentially inevitable? It doesn't really matter how modern or clean your country is, if you aren't having enough kids, the wheels are going to fall off the wagon at some point. 33% of the population is above age 60, which is ridiculous.

It would take Japanese culture completely rewiring itself to get over this, which I guess is possible, but not entirely probable.

The Vietnamese are going to jump on this like Jordan on a trampoline. They've been flooding China and South Korea for work opportunities legally and illegally, and the women also take advantage of marriage prospects. From one country that doesn't have an aging problem or a shortage of babies to another that may or may not have a grim future. I like Vietnamese, but they'll flood Japan, marry and eventually dilute the Japanese gene pool. Japan is making a huge mistake because they think they can "control" immigration, but once there's a crack in the gates, a flood will rush in due to a gradual decline in strict immigration policies and increased dependence on foreign workers. For shame, Japan.

Happy Pearl Harbor Day, by the way.

Edit: I just picture some old Japanese guys sitting around saying "them damn foreigners took all our cat cafe jobs.'

Let's keep this in perspective.
The new law allows a maximum of 340,000 foreign workers to immigrate over five years.
The Japanese population is 125 million.

Only the exceptionally skilled will be allowed to stay beyond 5 years.
It's obvious even this law won't come close to fixing the current worker shortage, but companies are introducing more robots by the day.

Japan will be fine.

It seems like they're taking in a very small number (relative to their population and relative to the hordes coming into the US and Europe) of people, that the vast majority of those people are east/southeast Asians, and that in order to stay longer than a few years they'll be required to assimilate. I think it's tenable. As long as they are truly forced to assimilate or leave and aren't allowed to take over a neighborhood of Tokyo or Osaka and ghettoize they'll help pump up the country's population while eventually breeding into Japanese indistinguishable from any other.

How's the assimilation process going for Europe and North America? That's the problem. Even people kind of sort of related to Japs like SE Asians will influence Japan's culture. I live in Vietnam and its attitudes towards littering alone is world's apart from Japan. You have to take into consideration more substantial things like collective IQ and technological level and what each is capable of. Then you have birth rates. Japanese men won't be able to resist the chance at foreign wives that are much less demanding, less likely to treat their husbands like ATM machines and are driven to have babies unlike many career focused Japanese women. You've got hordes of SE Asian women jumping at the chance to start families abroad in richer countries and will do low skill labor for low pay. Japan wants to control their immigration and make sure foreigners assimilate, however that's measured (it's not because it's impossible). Once Japan meets their immigration quota, it'll figure why not let in a few more to fill more jobs for cheaper wages and expand its service based economic niches, which will set off an economic growth cycle that demands more people that Japs aren't birthing.

Basically Asian students and poor SE Asian people who want to make more money but don't want to move too far from home. And even the smattering of yellow fever/weeaboo Westerners will likely leave once they see how shitty Japanese companies are (11 hour work days, anyone?)

I'm not as worried for Japan as I am for Europe; most of the immigrants coming to Japan are Asian, and although obviously all Asians are not the same, their phenotypes are much closer to Japanese than an African's is to a European's, in many ways their cultures are closer to Japanese than Africa to Europe's (not like I said, not the same), and I think Japan would tolerate less shit than Europe. Once these Asian immigrants have kids, the kids will pass for Japanese and assimilate.

I was gonna say the same. Be careful what you wish for. Japan has a brutal work culture and a fairly high suicide rate. The religion there is WORK.
