You can have a good time, but you need to be smart about it. The work environment is a horrific meat grinder. If you don't speak the language well you won't be able to get any decent jobs, and you're looking at at least 2-3 years of hard work to get anywhere with it. If you just walk in thinking "Hot girls! Pussy paradise!" you'll get destroyed. As others have said, there are EXTREMELY few American/European immigrants in Japan because A.) the work environment is shit. B.) The language is a brutal monster. C.) It's a pay cut and a quailty of life downgrade versus what you can get in the US. Immigrants are mostly Asians, with a few Africans and indians/arabs who seem to keep to themselves. Asians will probably assimilate, but I'm not sure about assimilation for those who aren't asian. I've never seen a Japanese girl dating an African or an Indian. Dating an American, at least one who's not a dorky slob, is something of a status symbol, but I have to think marrying somebody from Nigeria would be considered pretty embarrassing. As for this immigration thing, I'm going to take a wait and see attitude. I remember people saying the same thing when they released the fast track citizenship rules, and those ended up requiring an ultra-difficult language certification, a minimum income of 100k a year, an MBA, or possibly multiple patents. I've never even heard of anybody getting citizenship with one of those.
