Whatever your views on the issue, it isn't civil disobedience when you actually are the State.
Bitch clearly doesn't understand how this works.
I love how the same people who want other government officials to disobey laws of their choice are now saying she should implement the so-called law anyway. This is the problem with societies. Should the Gestapo have enforced the roundups or should one officer somewhere look the other way and risk jail by violating bad laws? It is insane. If a law is bad, it should be disobeyed, not mindlessly enforced.

I think deep down this is why some liberals do not like Christianity. Christianity teaches that there is a higher law than the government. Governments can pass laws, but they are not the ultimate arbiters of what is right and what is wrong.

You need only open a history book to see all of the atrocities committed by people who were "only following orders" and doing what their government told them to do.

Since she has not been conscripted to her position, practically speaking, it would make more sense for her to just quit the job if it conflicts with her moral standards.

I agree, she could have just stepped down but she obviously wanted to take a stand and be a martyr of sorts. The same way that the gay marriage people descend on businesses and sue to get a cake that is clearly going to have at least one turd mixed into the batter when they are forced to make it. They could go an get a cake in the shape of two dicks crossed like swords in extreme realism by any trendy cake shop...but they want to make a statement.

American Conservative had a good article on this.

Christians are not allowed to break the law, she should have resigned.

People harping on her divorces don't know she only converted a few years ago. After the divorces.

Was she actually breaking the law or just not doing her job? I would imagine a process exists to recall or impeach elected officials in that county.

If I worked at subway and refused to give people tuna salad sandwiches because I thought it was gross...am I breaking the law, or just not doing my job? What about if I was putting customers money in my pocket vs. the cash register...for one offence I should be fired, the other I should be prosecuted for breaking a law.

There would be some supreme irony if she did swear an oath, on a bible, that she will uphold the duties of her office though. If that is the case, definitely should have resigned.

I don't understand how people don't consider this to be civil disobedience.

Civil disobedience is the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government, or of an occupying international power.

Riddle me this: if she was The State, who sent her to jail?

As far as I'm concerned, what happened with this clerk being jailed is tantamount to fascism or communism.

It's happening before our eyes but many are not realizing it. Many Americans ( read most and some on the forum ) are akin to the proverbial frog who was initially put into a pot of cold water. The heat is slowly turned up and the frog, over time, is boiled to death, without realizing what is happening.

It's their strategy of incrementalism in small doses.

This is fascism/ socialism / marxism and that is happening slowly before our eyes.

What did Stalin do with people who disagreed with his radical ideologies? He jailed them or worse. Same with Pol Pot or Mao.

Obama is the president of executive orders and uses the weapon of prison against those who don't agree with his radical leftist/ socialist / marxist view of this country. He jails them.

This clerk had the courage to stand up to the freak show that the US is becoming. She stood against something that, just a few years back, would have been considered almost incomprehensible. She stood against something that our ancestors and forefathers would have considered a no-brainer to stand up against.

Today, it's all but accepted and in many quarters, celebrated.

For doing this, she was steamrolled. Collateral damage in Obama's quest to "fundamentally change America"

In this he's already succeeded. He has fundamentally changed the country for the worse. Race relations are worse and worsening. Obama's/ Soros' armies are razing cities in Ferguson and other American cities. These armies are his version of the "workers" Marx wrote about in his manifesto. The workers who would rise up against the upper classes and throw off their chains of oppression and take control of the country. Only, Obama's 'workers' aren't workers at all. Their unemployed, and often paid, rioters and community agitators. A dangerous lot.

Gayness prevails in the courts and the laws of the land and those who stand up to this madness are not dismissed for their position, they're not fined or censured. They are jailed.

No fine. Jail.

These fascists don't cut any slack for those who go against their perverted view of where they want to take this country.

How can I use the terms fascist, socialist and communist in the same description you ask? Because, when any of these ideologies go to their common denominator which is Dictatorship, they are one in the same; a state ruled by the elite with the under classes (proles for 1984 buffs) falling in line or else.

Obviously, we're nowhere near the breadth that it was in the former Soviet Union, Mao's China or Orwell's vision, but it is beginning. It's happening. It is happening before our very eyes.

She was jailed for standing up for, what just 15 years ago, would have been considered a no brainer.

It's the marxist's strategy; to take over American through slow, steady incrementalism. Sometimes so slow and steady that the public doesn't realize the way the country is being fundamentally changed into something aberrant and irreversible.

First, one clerk gets jailed for refusing to grant a marriage license to a lesbian couple. Who knows what other anti American laws the administration will pass going forward?

Then, what happens to those who refuse to get in line with them? The precedent has already been set with this clerk. When subsequent Americans are jailed for refusing to step in line with other insane legislation that may be down the line, it won't seem so crazy to most Americans because, "hey remember that upstart clerk who was jailed for disobeying the 'law of the land'? "

Give Obama and his ilk an inch, they will not only take a mile, they will take it all if allowed.

It's attention whoring not to mention self riteousnes. She has no moral position on the matter having multiple divorces and kids out of wedlock.

Exactly. It's not about "gay rights". Hell, it's not even about forcing everyone to embrace homosexuality. It's part of bigger plan to stomp out religion, conservatism, destroy the traditional family. As long as there are conservative/religious/traditional families in the world, these people are going to be unhappy. Personally, I also think there's a certain insecurity/inferiority psychological complex going on with many LGBTQ people. They know deep down that they're messed up, their hate is just the way their envy of straight/traditional people and culture manifests itself. They need to constantly ram it in our faces to make themselves feel better about themselves.

This is the slippery slope people are laughed at for believing. Won't bake a cake? Lose your business. Won't hold a wedding? Lose your church. Won't license a marriage? Go to jail.

The end game is literally the criminalization of Christianity.

"The law is the law" is a quaint notion that doesn't exist in America anymore in the first place. We have mayors and governors actively defying federal immigration law and getting away with it because the media agrees with their position. Same with federal drug laws.

I applaud her doing this but she's going to get steamrolled.

Anal marriage is a complete joke and a disgrace.

Nailed it like a boss.

Hillary Clinton broke her oath hundreds of thousands of times over a four year period six years ago, and they still haven't gotten around to actually going through the entire server.

This woman denies to marriage licenses over a two week period, and she is in jail.

This country is fucked.

It's absolutely ridiculous that she is in jail over this. I don't support her taking this stance as a public official but the reaction is disproportionate, and I don't care if it's "easy" or not to handle it another way.

She is denying people's rights by not issuing them marriage licenses in accordnce with the law. Her religious views are immaterial.

Look at it from the other side; If she was allowed to do this, then the citizens of other counties could elect County Clerks to nullify the law of the land.

That would not end well.

I find her marriage/personal history fascinating.

While married to her first husband, she became pregnant by the man who would one day be her 3rd husband. She delivered #3's kids(twins) while married to #2, who adopted the kids. She then dumps #2 and marries #3, who she eventually also leaves for #4 (current).

Agree.

Hotwheels, for a local example...no one tried to jail Scott Walker and...whats the name of the senate leader?...for allegedly breaking senate procedural law...they went ahead and tried to recall them. Though the Madison liberals would have loved it, it wasn't even an option.

If you break the rules at work you get fired. She didn't commit any criminal offenses (no violation of life or property) yet goes to jail instead of being fired?

The beginning of the fagstapo.

The same cultural conservatism compels men to avoid sex (and even masturbation) before marriage and discourages heterosexual men from choosing alternative sexual strategies (i.e. having a harem as opposed to putting a ring on special snowflake). If we lived under such culturally conservative standards, I'd either be married to or divorced from my HS girlfriend, and I'm happy to neither.

People of all sexual orientations should be granted equal treatment under the law, and due to a unfortunate intertwining of church and state, marriage falls under this category.

In any case, its a great time to be a divorce lawyer
