I´ve never heard about women not receiving holy communion while on their period, but then I´m Catholic. The only time when a woman might abstain from it is after childbirth before the "churching of women" if that is customary in her parish as far as I know.

True.

We previously attended old calendar parishes (ROCOR), which is where we heard that. We go to a new calendar parish now because of where we live. That's why I thought it was maybe old vs. new calendar. Obviously not though since your parish is old calendar. Kind of a mystery here.

Edit to add: one of our previous parishes had a big Greek Old Calendar influence, so maybe it came from there, and I didn't know it?

Really? I thought every Orthodox jurisdiction did this. Maybe it's something old calendar parishes still do, but new calendar parishes don't? We're at a new calendar parish now so maybe I should ask.
Well, I'm old calendar. It may be best to check with your priest.

It seems like a lot of older-generation women in many Christian churches were led to believe that being on their period precluded them from normal participation in various ways. I've never seen it hold up under scrutiny by actual authority when brought to light and questioned.

I've also known many who believed circumcision of their newborn male children was a requirement of their faith/religion (more than a few Mormon ladies were in a tizzy over "religious discrimination" when insurance companies and the state called it "elective" and stopped paying for it), when it is most certainly not.

It's not being on your period that's the issue. It's bleeding for any reason. So it's the bleeding, not being "unclean" from the period.

I remembered one place where I read about it - a biography of St. Paisios of Mt. Athos. He had hemorrhaging for a while, so he was unable to take Communion. He prayed that God would stop the bleeding long enough for him to take Communion.

I found it! This book is huge so I thought it would take a lot longer.

The book is St. Paisios of Mount Athos, by Heiromonk Isaac. St. Paisios "lost so much blood that his face turned pallid." So, very serious illness.

"The Elder was not worried about his condition. The only thing he asked was that God mercifully arrange for his hemorrhaging to stop when Divine Liturgy was served, so that he could partake of communion; and, for a time, this happened."

The first quote was from the bottom of page 312. The second one was from the top of page 313.

It's within the altar that bleeding is a problem. Doesn't apply to menstruation.
St. Paisios would have taken Holy Communion in the nave, not the altar, since he wasn't a priest. It was the bleeding that was the issue, not his location.

What I was taught was that Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ, and when you partake, His Body and Blood become a part of you, particularly so within a few hours of partaking. So if you are bleeding or throwing up, you are not supposed to take Communion. If you start bleeding within a few hours afterwards, then you're supposed to burn the paper towel or whatever you used to soak up the blood. Then the ashes have to be put in a place where they won't be stepped on.

Change of topic: on investments:
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
buying gov't bills is forcing your neighbours, other taxpayers, to be beholden to you-you're adding to the public debtload.
I successfully cashed out an investment through work that I originally thought I had picked 'cash' to be held in...no, it had been held in some unknown money market fund invested in who knows what, I don't think just 'money'
I took this small amount and immediately paid off debt.

And I investigated another pension and I cannot access until 6 more years have past and I reach the age.
It makes me sick, I've known since midAugust I'm trapped into supporting who knows what.
Thankfully a percentage of it is in reit which I pray acts ethically, but the rest could be breaking the Ten Commandments.

The only solace I have is that I successfully removed the small one and I continue to cull my book and movie and other belongings to reflect my faith. I try to be consistent with where my consumer dollar goes as well. I believe in boycotting. It works to alleviate your own spiritual angst.

My suggestion: Land is finite......
buy land. Be like Mr. FenceOpenings.

At least some type of real estate.

Research, research, research before getting tantalised by an employer or guild's pension plan.
I got the bigger one out with an excuse I found.
I'm choosing just a one year Gic, they probably invest that wherever though, right?

So I may be no better off, may still be immoral.

It had to be transferred to a 'financial institution'.....and the gics had the shortest terms available.

I wish it could have been transferred in trust to a certified individual who shares my investing choices. I'll keep investigating if there's a way to do this.

Is it a booklet that is for sale somewhere online, that you can provide a link to? I'd love to see it.

Treebeard says he's going to ask our current priest about it. I'm pretty sure we've never asked him.
Did he have a chance to ask?? I hate that they put the bathrooms in our churches in a place where you have to walk in front of the pulpit to go to the restroom. It's very telling. Probably because the indoor plumbing was added later, and they're all designed the same. Maybe catering to the choir.

Not yet. We usually go to a recently started mission which is closer to us that doesn't have a priest (reader services). We still travel to our parish with a priest sometimes, so hopefully he'll remember to ask when we're there next.

My family went to a church like that when I was a kid. The fellowship hall and bathrooms were behind the platform that the preachers and musicians sat on, where the pulpit was. Of course misbehaving children had to be taken back there too, so the poor parents had to take them out in front of everyone. They eventually did some renovations and fixed that.

Even if I'm not pregnant, my cycles are definitely getting longer, and that is a good sign.

I had an opportunity to salvage some abandoned stock of ingredients and bulk foods left behind from a small business that closed recently, and one of the things I got was a big bag of herbal fertility support tea, so I've been drinking that pretty regularly for a few weeks. I would have never spent money on something like that ("hippie magic potions lol"), so I'll get a pretty good chuckle if end up pregnant right after I started drinking it.

The Dollar Tree tests work just as well as the expensive ones. :) (Twice confirmed.) If it's a faint line, it just means it's early.
Well, these are cheaper than the dollar store ones. It's just the tiny little strip that would be inside the plastic casing. I think I paid six or seven bucks for 20 tests. But hopefully the same thing holds true! I've never seen a second line before on any test when I wasn't pregnant, even looking again hours later, so I guess I've only heard unsubstantiated rumors of evaporation lines so far! :laughter:

My best friend got a bag of tiny red solo cups and tests from her neuroscience lab when she was tryna conceive. I went right over to the health department with both of my pregnancies and signed up for WIC. Word on the street is they finally got rid of vouchers and give cards to get your pregnancy friendly foods. Even if we don't eat it all, someone always used the groceries.
