Are you familiar with that babushka and the incident involving her harassment by Ukies? This meme takes on a different meaning when you know that hundreds of people like her were massacred for the crime of "collaboration" with the enemy, across Ukraine.
I'm not really fond with the Soviet flag either, or things like the Lenin Mausoleum on Red Square, but I understand that those Soviet elements are vestigial artifacts of their modern cultural history, particularly in their association with WW2. China has a very similar relationship with its communist past and Mao's legacy.
Communist symbolism was in use weeks before the incident you are referring to, hence the latter bears little importance. If it wasn't for 80 year old grandma they'd have found another reason to non-stop put the commie flag in your face - as the Kremlin grandpas have ordered to frame this conflict as a legacy of The Great Patriotic War.
That obviously doesn't make sense from whatever angle you look at it but orders are orders. There were so many options here: war against NATO, war against degeneracy, war of liberation.. But no, they had to start dusting their commie regalia off whilst simultaneously insulting/dehumanizing the Ukrainians by calling them nazis. Therefor the Russian propaganda effort is not only cringeworthy, it is also plain dumb.
The Soviet symbolism/ nazi babble together with the Chechen Muslim horde psy-op (which I explained a couple of days ago) and the downright inflammatory remarks coming from bright Kremlin men about the 'historical non-existence of the Ukraine nation/state' - have assured that now 80-90 percent of the Ukrainians have rallied behind their leadership, with the Ukrainian Armed Forces showing almost suicidal zeal in protecting their country.
Who can blame them when the first thing they see is Lenin getting put back on his pedestal - a man who is responsible for the death of millions of Ukrainians (decommunization policies in the FSU have always been a hot issue with Russia constantly interfering).
Henichesk.
Melitopol.
So all in all my initial comment was a tad lenient. Instead I should have gone the whole nine yards and call the propaganda cringeworthy
and dumb, counter-productive, intellectually lazy etc. etc.
Russian geriatrics need to take a good look at how US does these things. Creating division through exploiting fault lines in society. Elite conditioning. Bribery. Slick information campaign. Amnesty. Etc. The Kremlin skips all of those (not a single high up within the Ukrainian state has turned so far) and instead starts weaponizing entire societies against it through the above described.
