Lust

Having spent most of my adult life not considering viewing lustful images online to be harmful, I too struggle with this matter. The main thing that has helped me is considering that children at increasingly young ages are tainted by seeing pornography. And by indulging in it I am contributing to the profligation of this cancer. Considering this has really helped me to avoid this filth because seeing the link between it and the harm of young innocent children is something I cannot shrug off. Also putting child safety filters on my internet service provider, and on my mobile provider has also helped. Whilst I have access to change this, having to take that step is an interruption in the process that can help to stop it. Other things that help is having icons around where you are most likely to fall, or things that otherwise remind you of Christ.

It's a struggle, and you are very much not alone in this. Many of us have been poisoned by the culture into thinking this is a harmless thing, and it can be very hard to separate yourself from it once it has got it's hooks in you. The main thing is that you are trying to break free from it. It can also be a good reminder of how much we need Christ, as a reminder not to fall into pride, or judgement of others.

Matthew 6:22-23

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"

Powerful video and scripture passages.

"For do you know that one who joins with a prostitute becomes one body with her..."

Disturbing.

And written at a time when most women were chaste! Imagine the population now, with many women probably being more promiscuous than prostitutes of the past.

It's a warning to younger guys to resist any deviances and for us who have repented of our past lustful sins to stay on the path towards Christ.

A general question for anyone that can answer:

I have confessed my lustful sins to a priest time and time again. However, now I am beginning to worry that I was not specific enough.

If I have texted others online in a form of "sexting" and my confession was:

"I have masturbated and talked about lustful acts with others and looked at lustful media."

Would that be a good confession or would I need to be more specific? I feel like all of it goes without saying I have committed adultery in my heart.

Just need peace of mind. Thank you in advance.

In my humble opinion, I would try and be as specific as possible. Dates, times, specific acts. How you felt at the time and afterwards, etc.

Not only does this better equip the priest to more fully understand your sins, it also serves to shame/embarrass yourself again by describing your sinful behaviour out loud to another person.

It's probably best to direct that question at your confessor if possible. I'd imagine he would ask if he needed more information, but perhaps not.

I'd say to your confessor that you are worried about having not given enough detail in confession. He is undoubtedly the best person to ask this question as he is the one hearing your confession, he will either put your mind at ease or say 'feel free to be more specific next time'

Let's be honest 98% of the guys he hears confession from are going to be talking about fapping, don't let Satan trick you into feeling uniquely ashamed about confessing it...

Some important articles I found about masturbation

And also, when it comes to sex toys, such as fleshlights or sex dolls for men, dildos or vibrators for women, those are what the bible refers to as "cursed objects". If you have any, dispose of them immediately.

Deuteronomy 7:26

“Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.”

I wouldnt turn the confessional into a porno booth for the priest.

I would be specific in the sin that was committed but light on the details of what exactly you were watching etc.

For instance:

Father forgive me for my sins of lust. While at the beach I tried to shield my eyes and was unsuccessful with numerous women who walked by in scantily clad attire. This led me to masterbation."
