The US mixes up things as usual. Freud invented modern psychology, not psychiatry. Only in the US are they intertwined. Psychiatry is a field that came about from a crazy jew (not Freud), jamming an ice pick into the nose of crazy people, then declaring success. His success and personal conviction was so great he traveled the country doing his ice pick/nose routine without anesthetic or cleanliness. Then psychiatry had their second golden age when they discovered, probably from experiences with torture, that electric current through the brain erased short term memory. Which was good because people were now not so happy with the whole ice pick to the brain thing, since it turned people into zombies or killed them outright. They stopped being annoying of course. Lastly, modern psychiatry owes its discovery to toxic pesticides. They (again probably CIA) noticed that farm workers who worked with some pesticides began acting strange, so they (probably the CIA) tested it on crazy people with good effect. That's where we're at. That said, these anti-psychotics can be the lesser evil. If you've been around a raving paranoid scizhophrenic, then you will probably agree. It's not a stretch to imagine why people believed them to be possessed in the past.
