I've decided to start listening to metal now that I know they are sworn enemies of the SJW movement. I don't know much about the genre and I'm looking for recommendations. I like Mastodon, The Sword, and Protest the Hero.

I cannot see this having the same effect as the Gamergate issue.
For one reason alone. Like Veloce and a few others said before, Metal is tooooo diverse. Your average Satanic/Black/Death metal bands and fans probably won't pay attention enough to know someone is criticizing them on social media in the first place. If they did, they would not care at all.
That said, I can see them attacking the more generic metal bands, easy to hate bands (like Metallica), very popular bands that post alot on social media (Deftones, Disturbed, etc.), or even those skinny jeans hipster Scream core/Mathcore and Christian metal kids (The Devil Wears Prada, The Fall of Troy, Haste the Day, Protest the Hero, etc.).
One of the more interesting bands like this has a girl for lead vocals. I Wrestled a Bear Once. She is not bad looking and has cool sounding growls and vocal voice. You would think she looks like a hideous fat dude, until you see her. This band has lots of fans, including myself. If the talent is there the fans will flock. There are a few other metal bands with women in them that are popular as well.
Whoever said attacking metal is like attacking a hydra was 100% correct. Too many different scenes of metal out there. There are just as many Skinheads and demonic guys as their are skinny jeans wearing ones. Like Veloce said, if you put all the fans of the bands I even mentioned in one room, many would not share anything in common with anyone in the room.

Back in college the feminists always tried shaming the metalheads. Even the feminist beta orbiters admitted that metal was "cool" unless they were blindly militant. We didn't care about politics or their gender classes, we liked the sounds we heard - end of story.
We naturally felt a stronger pull to Norse myth, motorcycles, leather, electronics and crazy solos than veganism, bell hooks and that same fucking D major chord. No one cared about anyone's color or orientation. We were drunk kids from all walks of life brought together by our love of music, not politics.
Apparently for them metal was immature and hateful and music should be 'all about the message' (translation: feminist lyrics with stripped down, anemic music). We were actually open minded in the beginning and went to a few of their concerts. My friends and I looked at each other like we were about to fall asleep. Contrast to the SJWs-in-making who never took an honest effort to appreciate metal. At best they would stand around outside a show, feigning cool while gossiping about nonsense.
For much of metal the message is auditory, not verbal (though lyrics can be inspirational). The aesthetic, the theatrics, and attitude is all secondary to the music. Saw one of them a few years back dressed normal and dating some banker, poor guy. Some slept with teachers for favors, others would cause drama and get exiled from their social circles for being insufferable cunts.
Also hipsters have been infesting metal music for years, stripping away the manhood and ballsy riffs for meandering garbage with pseudo-intellectual drivel. You could feel a lack of testosterone in those guys.

Metal has always been a genre for men who are not afraid to be men. Not everyone can write metal. There's no "formula", rather a surge of personality and energy. It can be simple or complex. Done right, it's a mix of logic, emotion, creativity and economics, something I doubt SJWs can bring together skillfully, hence their relegation to journalism.
I met a very attractive off-the-boat Slavic girl a few years back who loved extreme metal. She was feminine, bubbly and wore skirts and 6" heels everywhere. Last I saw she was exposed to hipsterville as she let herself go and developed a rotten attitude. Coincidence?
There are heavy metal fans from all around the world in all shapes and forms. South America has a huge scene with big festivals every year. In my travels around Europe I've seen a range from the stereotypical tatted up militant to French schoolgirls, Scandinavian businessmen and cab drivers speeding through at 3AM blasting their speakers. The minute you and an aggressive looking Slavic guy start talking about music and heavy metal comes up, call out the next day because revelry is to be had all around.
What brings all these disparate kinds of people together is their love of a music driven by a fundamental will to not be sucked into society's mediocrity. SJWs want to infiltrate metal to tame the beast from within and shackle them to mediocrity.
In a way, metal is antifragile because there is no "community". There is no "base" to strike at because metal fans come from everywhere and anywhere. You can attack the stereotypes but the cells will still exist. It's music, it doesn't need a base. It exists in your mind. They've been barring bands from entering the US or from playing in venues around the world for years but the music itself lives on.
What SJWs seek to accomplish is systemized brainwashing. They don't just want you to look, vote and talk like them, now you must feel like them. Deep down into your psyche, you must truly believe their perception of the world. All in the name of justice.
The only political agenda comes between the choice of freedom and control. The SJW's want self-censorship, and mind control. Their "anti-fa" methods are a backdoor to authoritarianism. If they were to succeed, the shape of the music would change because it will become engineered to fit an unnatural mold based on theoretical nonsense.
All this because their feelings are hurt.

You're totally right about the different crowds. There's a lot of hipsters/leftism in newer metal, especially metalcore. Unbowed mentioned Liturgy earlier, which is a great example. I can't stand Deafheaven. Same hipster horseshit.
Hardcore and punk rock are more fertile grounds for SJW bullshit. One kid ran a spot that was a combination of art gallery/DIY music venue. He got married to some bitchy riot grrrrrrlll and started including feminist slam poetry in between bands. Needless to say I stopped going to those shows real fucking quick.

I generally don't give a shit about metal lyrics (most are actually really corny) except when they support feminism or other leftist/SJW issues. I largely quit going to punk rock shows even though I love punk because I'm sick of the leftist shit.
I don't have too many good recommendations for you since I don't like sludge, but you might want to check out Baroness, Isis, Pelican, Black Tusk, Red Fang, etc. Just fire up Spotify and check out "related artists." If you want I'll post a few blogs I read when I'm looking for new music.

Oh and speaking of Peefuck, they're going to be one of the major sites in promoting sjw values for metal. They've talked about almost nothing but this bullshit in the indie realm in the last year while still reviewing stuff like the Shady Records album/compilation, hating it for being bigoted, and left that review up for the entirety of Thanksgiving weekend. They review a lot of metal and have a spin-off site for metal so I can promise you they're looking to cause trouble.
