I'm watching "To Hell and Back", with Audie Murphy playing himself.

Murphy was the number one most decorated soldier of WWII, and he wrote "To Hell and Back" as his autobiography. This is the movie of the book, and they had him play himself.

He's a decent actor. The movie has the typical wartime adventure and emotional situations. Fear, seeing friends die, comradeship, etc. It's a hardcore war movie like they made back in the 50s.

There are a number of scenes where he does ridiculously heroic stuff, but if you read the official descriptions of the acts he received medals for, these scenes are strictly accurate. This movie has a 100 percent rating , and rightly so.

I have "Cyrano DeBergerac" the version with Gerald Depardeux (1990) with subtitles. Don't get me wrong I liked the Hollywood version with Jose Ferrer. I thought his performance was an on-stage tour-de-force but I liked the Studio Canal version much better. It did not feel like a stage performance at all. And Anne Brochet in her prime as Roxanne!!!!!! Hubba Hubba. ;)

Yes, the 1950 version at times does feel like a theater performance rather than a film, guilty as charged.

But the film is worth watching for Ferrer's performance alone. He captured the essennce of the character and the book!

The 1990 version is just a Rom Com trading on the name.

The 1950 version has a Christian ending - perhaps overly dramatic ending but it works. The Rom Com didn't even attempt this.
