This is really nothing new. I've heard this argument made before that if you want to take it literally alpha is the king and there's only one, beta who many consider to be a pussy is actually the second in line to the alpha so actually though not hte top dog the next toughest and last is the omegas who are the followers, I guess there's probably different levels within the omegas as well.
I dont think you have to take the whole alpha beta thing literally though just as a construct to better understand societies levels / classes / relationships, etc.
