^^^^ This is a future revenue stream for Bezos, he can upsell customers with an anti-theft device for their packages. Same business model as companies charging for protection against identity theft. That's the reason police doesn't go after thieves stealing packages, but will instead crack down on people downloading movies at the behest of big media.

I get the feeling that some of the thefts might have been staged. You have guys going into monologues alone in their cars, makes for good videos but doesn't seem very natural.

It would take years to even get the package taken that many times in my neighborhood.

If any weren't faked, they probably set the package on a random street corner and waited for someone to pick it up.

Fake or not, think about the premise: the police don't care, and won't do anything, about daytime robberies.

This should be extremely worrisome... at least, it would be if you didn't already realize that society was falling.

Agreed. This thread is really about the rapidly lowering of trust in society.

We take high trust for granted.

There are so many ways to take advantage of that.

And we are currently learning all about it.

When I was a kid, my friend's house was burgled. Within an hour or so of it being reported, there was a team of police on the scene taking fingerprints and knocking on neighbour's doors. Fast forward 30 years and I had another friend's house being burgled. The police arrived after 5 days and barely did anything beyond taking some notes. Apparently they are just too busy to take these things seriously, yet we keep hearing that crime has dropped significantly over the past few decades.

I loved that video. Was very cool and creative.

The guy finally had something go viral to make his YT video blowup.

You can tell he's been strategizing for viralness. Everything was fine-tuned for virality from the title "NASA engineer builds fart bomb" to the production quality of the vid. He's been at this a long time and it's always awesome when the hard work pays off for someone who's paid his dues.

Yeah, definitely staged with the NordVpn plug at the end :(

pretty sad that most of those things these days are staged and scripted

No, that's just a brand sponsoring a YouTube influencer. Lots of YTbers do it. It's more permanent than the display ad front-loading a video and an extra income stream. It doesn't mean that it's staged, just mean that he's considered an Influencer worthy of sponsorship.

"Viral Video of Glitter Bomb for Package Thieves Exposed as Partial Fake"

https://gizmodo.com/viral-video-of-glitter-bomb-for-package-thieves-exposed-1831254130

Gizmodo received an email tip that some of the story didn’t add up, and we took a look at a confusing (yet compelling) Imgur library dissecting the most suspicious parts. But even before that tip came in, we reached out to Rober, who never responded to our request for comment. And NordVPN, which sponsored the original video, stopped responding after we sent a spokesperson questions asking whether parts of the video were staged.

Down in Colombia if the cops can’t or won’t handle the problems in the barrio, which happens often, the locals chip in to hire death squads (often off duty cops) to fix the problem. They call it social cleansing and the killers will distribute flyers saying that the time is coming for all drug dealers, addicts, hookers, gays, etc to get the fuck off the streets. It’s not uncommon for a dozen or more people to be killed in a weekend by vans full of masked up dudes with pistols. Rapists and pedos are often hanged in the street, I think on average a few guys are killed that way every week in Bogota.

Anyway, I would fully support the Colombian style mass shooting and lynching of these porch thieves.

That seems a bit harsh, considering that most of these porch thieves are paid actors.

That Rober dude is engaging in deceptive infotainment, hope he pays the price for this.

I actually lost a package recently, after not arriving I called up Amazon and they said it was delivered to my apartment building. So I asked some questions and apparently it’s routine for packages to be left in unsecured apartment entrances where anyone can walk off the street and snatch them. Fortunately they refunded me but from now on I will request a pick up at the local shipping depot in my city.

Still, I was pretty pissed, I would definitely like to see the thief die.

Why arn't people using mailboxes? And fences?

In my country everyone uses mailboxes for package receiving so such a problem is unthinkable.

This is something American have not thought over.

Also - Americans claim they have a lot of freedom but they are not allowed to fence off their front yard, so I have read.

This problem would not exist if the whole yard would be separated by fence and postal service didn't just left packages at door, but at mailbox or post station.

It seems absurd to me how selective people are when fighting about their rights and privacy - worrying about privacy on net but fencing off front yard is so accepted it is not even considered.

Think about it - your culture puts great emphasis on keeping that lawn beautiful for every neighbor to see. It is your private land but you work hard to keep up a territory you can have no privacy in, that you cannot use because it is too public. It is irrational.

All those anecdotes about an American guy guarding his perfectly mowed lawn with a shotgun - how about building a fence? Much less active attention required, much less violence required, much less legal troubles. Much more privacy, much more land can be used as you see fit.

Such simple things but utterly out of order due to cultural prejudices and irrational habits.

People are going to call me no fun and party killer for suggestion to buld a fence and use a mailbox - but hey you know what - fences work, walls work, mailboxes work.

Americans display a lot of fake bravado about using their guns. In your heart you know you will not use a gun over minor issues like that, because you don't want to go to prison for using excessive force for killing a guy for stepping on your lawn. Rights to bear arms are good, but you must be realistic about when you are really free to use them.

You have a lot of rights to own guns, but very few rights to actually use them and you know it. But this is again another example of you turning a bling eye to one instance of freedoms and overrating another instance of freedoms.

That's only if you live in a planned development managed by a homeowner's association. In most of America, the only limitation is that it cannot be over four feet tall in the front.

Amazon has now installed self service lockers in grocery stores that you can have a package delivered to. The maximum size is 19 x 12 x 14 inches and maximum weight is 20lbs. It also must be from Amazon, contain no hazardous materials and have a value lower than $5000.
