Empire of the Sun is my favorite group in the world. I recently kicked a girl that I was gaming out of my apartment when she made disparaging remarks about the Empire of the Sun songs on my playlist... that bitch better go find some other dick cause she ain't getting mine.

Some fan made video, but the song is lovely

People been doing this since the end of the 1990s. Nothing innovative about it really. Some of it is ok.

Yes it started out with Ladytron, who were the best of the first wave of 80s revival, back in the mid-90s when people started getting bored of flannel rock.

A solid B-side:

Some interesting inspirations like this one which channels a bit of the original Doctor Who theme:

There was a second wave in the mid-00s, but it was less of a pure 80s synthpop inspiration and blended several genres, including shoegaze and krautrock, like Fujiya and Miyagi:

This third wave revival doesn't surprise me at all, given how crap a lot of the recent mainstream music is, and yes it is great club music and the women dig it, it's been good to me.

I like the halcyon quality of a lot of this stuff. I'm a big fan of 80s music in general. I still think I'd rather listen to contemporary stuff from the time but anything in this thread is still light-years ahead of a lot of the bullshit you hear today. The Miami Nights 1984 track was especially good.

Great thread.

Let me add a forgotten classic which is one of my favorites:

A channel worth checking out is the 'Patefon Channel', a lot of classic full albums of the genre (plus a lot of similar russian music).

https://www.youtube.com/user/PatefonChannel

You can also Youtube search 'italo disco' for many more classics (there's a lot of megamixes available), Savage is especially good, a musical genius who also produced some major hits of the 90's.

NewRetroWave is a bunch of modern bands who are trying to capture the sounds of the mid 80s. It is a lovely mixture of nostalgia and electronic eighties music. Think GTA Vice City.

If it's a new music genre, why is it replicating sounds of the 80s? How can a genre be new if it's carbon copying an old sound?

UK Garage, acid jazz, eurotrance and nu metal is dead. If I revive that, can I call it NewRetroWave2?

These hipsters making something that already exists, branding it as something new, and trying to make media hype off it. It's like when they revive old tv shows and toys. They did it with Mr Men, the Spider Man movie reboot, Andy Pandy, Bill & Ben, and more. It's a quick money grab.

Mark Ronson made a "NewRetroWave" album called Record Collection about reviving 80s sounds and sounds he used to hear as a child. He said so an interview. If you listen to his album, it sounds very retro and dated. I recommend you listen to it.

Look at the cover. It's made up of different vinyl singles and looks retro. In fact it's made up of the same amount of vinyl covers as there are songs on the album, one for each song. If you look it up on Wikipedia, it doesn't say "NewRetroWave". Instead it says inaccurate genres such as "synth pop" and "indie pop" when it's anything but that as they don't know how to classify it. Wikipedia has lots of inaccurate information.

Props to Cr33pin and others holding down this thread, I've discovered a lot of solid new tracks.

I also like when people do the 80's themed music videos, one of the most memorable I saw wasn't electro, but rather 80's inspired grooves where they took old footage and cleverly mixed in the producer himself:

Really surprised some of the better ones (at least to my ears) haven't made it in this thread yet.

I had the fortune of seeing Chvrches live last year and they put on a fantastic show for an electronic outfit. This remix of "The Mother We Share" in particular always gives me a hammerblow to the feels.

Perturbator recently released a new album and I basically can't stop listening to it.

Gunship is the singer from Fightstar's side project, and I think he should just quit his day job and get to another album.
