The mistake was in destabilizing Ukraine, thinking that breeding chaos would send Ukraine into EU's arms without Russia reacting.
This contention that the US destabilized Ukraine - a commonplace in the Putin controlled press and the fellow travelers in the American and European left (oddly enough).... where is the proof?
I see pretty clear proof that Russian special forces on the ground since Maidan, organizing, agitating, shooting (yeah, I can pull out dozens of links if need be). Ukraine was calm after Yanukovych left until Russian destabilized the situation on the ground. It would be calmer if he left.
Even if the US - or people like Soros - supported Maidan financially, it did not destabilize the country and its civil society. It may have destabilized a balance of power with Russia... and Russian claims to Ukraine (which range to realpolitik claims about a sphere of influence to claiming Ukraine is an artificial country and needs to be annexed as a whole).
So even if the US did play a role in supporting Maidan, I say bravo. The Ukrainians I know supported it and want more. World politics be damned. Without Maidan, Ukraine was on a path to Putin-style dictatorship for the long term.
Agree it is really unclear what Romney would have done differently. However, acting tough seems to matter in the Slavic world and this has definitely hurt Obama.
