Swaziland and Boatswaina have populations with almost a 3rd of whom are infected with HIV. No lie it's up there like 28% followed by a whole lot of other African countries. even the ones with "good" rates of HIV are at like 5% or 1 in 20. Now what business this chick had bringing this up in a tweet is beyond me. Was she planning on an unpretected gang bang when she hit the ground? What would lead her to believe she would be a candidate for HIV?

The whole point is that she doesn't believe that she's a candidate for HIV. It's the same hysterical screeching every time someone points out that the AIDS epidemic doesn't really exist among white heterosexual people who don't use needles.

I can imagine blundering a joke similarily, attempting to make fun of the people who speak of Africa's problems as if they're caused by the place itself and have nothing to do with the people who live there, and having it come out hostile. We all know that if you transplanted a bunch of white people (or Asians) in Africa they wouldn't magically develop the same dysfunctions like 30 % HIV rates but it's taboo in any way to even hint that you believe so.

I can't join in on that as I'm pretty fed up with this taboo and I don't think it even serves any purpose besides making a white liberals feel good about themselves. The readers get to feel morally-and-socially-superior, and better about themselves without any the actual expended effort required to better themselves, or the required social proof from others that they are. This is an addictive loop of easy self-affirmation that will drive the reader back to the supplier, again and again.

It's why women hate read, and can't look away, even though they should. The chemical hit their brains get from judgemental snark lights up the same pleasure centre in the mind as sex and food, and is addictive. You can see why a miserable, overweight, bitter, single woman would be drawn to a curated online persona of cunty superiority, probably involving some kind of overestimation of her intelligence shown by wearing Smart Girl Glasses in her profile pic.

To my eyes, it's been happening long enough that this is simply part of successful design of New Media: keep people offended, let them comment about how they're better people than that, and you have hooked them with what is basically a drug fix. If people who disagree with the original post make too much logical sense in their counter- arguments in the comments that might give people pause, then strictly moderate or ban commenting. There need be no pretense of debate when the process is simply about offering an easy chemical high to a junkie.

Yeah, fair enough I hear you. But it's pretty scary that we're all now at a point where we think this way (i.e. that she got what she deserved, she should have known, etc. (which I think as well)).
