Detachment. That's the Catholic word for what you're describing. We have to detach from all those things that aren't bringing us closer to Christ. In that light, it truly is a blessing that "Joe just being Joe" is president, and that his host of harpies will begin curtailing all of our attachments. It sure isn't going to feel like a blessing, though, so start now. Lent in the Roman Rite is coming up; Septuagesima Sunday (pre-Lent) is nearly upon us (January 31st), just one week from this Sunday. Start training your Will now. Start small and build up, just as any athlete would start training. Put down that second piece of pie. Don't click that stupid link on the sidebar. Go rake last year's leaves. Bring a plastic grocery bag on your morning walk and pick up the litter on your street. Bring your neighbor's trash barrels down their driveway when they're not there to thank you. If you can't will yourself to act (or not act) in the little things, you won't have a chance when the big stuff comes. You think you're tough, but you'll fold like a tent, or worse - overreact and make things even more oppressive for yourself. Caution: don't go completely overboard and puritanically scrub everything you enjoy from your life; few are called to be true ascetics. The goal is to put things in their proper order. The best way to do this is to Feast and Fast liturgically with the Church. We fast (detach) periodically at multiple intervals during the year to keep our desires and attachments in check; but we can also feast and ask the Lord to bless us and the gifts He's bestowed from His bounty. If you have a good homemade pizza recipe, pick a Feast Day on the calendar, invite friends and family and enjoy His blessings, making Christ the center of the Feast. Pax vobiscum
