Protein powder may be a scam, but not for the reason you suggest. Essentially you get what you pay for: A convenitent, condensed low carb form of protein.

I'm actually writing a blog post about why I hate most whey. I find that the whey is of poor quality, plus I have a mild lactose intolerance. I use vegan protein powders (not soy) and I have no issues with them. And they're actually cheaper then the optimum whey I used to buy.

I eat a shitload of plain Chobani, and I also eat a shitload of BSN Syntha-6.

Greek yogurt is exceptional. It's portable, easy to eat, and the protein is good quality. However, it gets boring after a while.

Today I tried to change it up, and I bought a ton of canned salmon. Turns out the brand I bought is full of bones and skin, so I'm gonna try to return it tomorrow.

If only everything were as convenient as protein powder.

If I could, I would eat tons more eggs, smoked salmon, lentils, grilled chicken, and tofu. However, that's just not an option for me, so I pay for protein powder.

I buy the Body Fortress 32oz can from Wal Mart for $18. It's pretty highly rated and easy on the wallet at about the cost of two drinks at a nightclub. 60g protein with 2 scoops. Not a bad deal at all.

-I take protein everyday after my workouts.

The minute you stop lifting weights, is the moment your body begins to recompose it self.
within 30 minutes of your body repairing itself, it needs Protein and or BCAA.

Without that inside your body immediately, it begins to cannabilize itself.

-If you're getting stomach cramps, your body doesnt have the digestive enzymes needed to break it down.

-if you're trying to achieve greater fat loss, you should try eating less greasy, and less salt in foods.
if you keep your calories at 2000 and you work out, your body should look exactly like me, in the avatar.

cheers

Ideally, when you're following a good diet, you should have plenty of slow digesting protein from other sources like meat or chicken in your system to take care of that.

Of course it can't hurt to take a whey shake.

I like Jay Robb a lot. You can order it from him directly.

A lot of protein has shit in it that doesn't belong. I've seen Splenda and other crap on some labels.

Haven't had protein powders or bars since 2010. use to be 187lbs, I am now 230lbs. Its primary use is getting maximum protein intake to get in under weight limits for your weight class.

If you're not competing I don't see why you'd need it. Your body does not grow on protein powder alone and last time I checked there were a lot of big men over the centuries who had big appetites and lifted heavy.

Did they have access to protein powder and all this other bullshit bro science?

I have cereal, 1 egg and a banana for breakfast and protein based foods till early evening. If I need a boost of energy I put some oats in a shaker with semi-skimmed milk. I keep electrolytes in check to keep energy levels up. My results are strength gains and less fat development.

Try it. Dont do this bro-science crap.

I buy my protein on sale(optimum Gold) at $8-$9/lb. I buy mass gainer 10lbs for $40.

I don't have the time to cook up a meal during work and after a workout, protein mixed with water is fastest way to release protein into your body, period.

Use it properly.

If you want to avoid all the soy protein, sweeteners and stabilizers just use egg white protein power and add your own stuff to it like frozen fruit or hell I whirr it up with high quality lemonade. Tastes like a liquid meringue.

Cheaper than protein powder.

I've started taking my protein by just pouring a scoop of powder in my mouth and washing it down with like 20oz of water or something.

I did it on a dare originally but it's actually not that bad. You don't even taste it!

A can of sardines is 70 cents on sale, contains 22g protein, 8g fat (omega 3), 0g carb, and 80% daily recommended calcium.

For losing weight it's hard to beat, since you're covering the two main supplements (calcium and fish pills), and eating solid food to combat hunger.

The only drawback is the fishy taste, but I found that's all in the skin of the sardine, which can be rinsed off. Once you do that it tastes the same as tuna with no mercury.

I think you're both right... I tend not to eat a huge amount of protein in my breakfast, and lift afterwards. I noticed that I feel less sore and recover faster if I chug a shake of whey and BCAAs right after lifting. I'm not stingy with them either. I've been putting 20g of BCAAs in there and I think it works better than when I only used 10g.

Saying Protein powder is a scam for the reason you listed is like saying buying a BMW is a scam cause you can save some money and get a Honda Civic that will still need to get you where you need to go.

I can't see myself putting a tub of yogurt in my gym bag and then whipping it out and eating it after a long work out. Don't get me wrong greek yogurt is good and packed with protein, but its like your comparing apples to oranges. They both have their pros and cons but neither is a scam.

Protein powder isn't the solution to everything, but I'm a fan.

- It's useful when you are bulking (more protein when you are already full)

- It's useful when you are cutting (low calorie but high protein to maintain muscle mass)

- It's pretty cheap (compare it to the cost of meat)

- You can carry it around with you anywhere.

And so on.

I've been doing a cut/body recomposition for the past few weeks. The main thing I changed besides cutting calories is drastically upping my intake of protein. At first I did this by adding protein powder to everything liquid or mushy in my diet. It was certainly effective in terms of getting my protein intake up to 1 g/lb but it also started getting expensive.

So I broke it down:
Cost: $18/340 g ($53/kg) of powder (Whey Factors 100% Natural Whey Protein)
Protein/Cal: 16 g/80 Calories (26g/100 Calories)
$/g protein: $0.20/g

Non-fat Greek Yogurt on the other hand:
Cost: $2.05/6 oz ($12/kg)
Protein/Cal: 18g/100 Cal
$/g protein: $0.11/g

So for basically half the price and a relatively small increase in carbs I can get the same amount of protein. Now I just eat bowls and bowls on nonfat greek yogurt everyday and I don't get the weird stomach cramps that came with the protein powder.

In the states I get Chobani or Fage non-fat plain Greek yogurt in 32 oz (a bit under 1kg) containers for less than $5 at Sam's (Chobani) or Costco (Fage). Chobani at an 8oz serving is 22g protein / 11 g carbs. Put in a tablespoon of agave and it's around 16g carbs and that's plenty sweet for me, plus Agave is low glycemic index so it metabolizes better than sugar. Honey is also a great option. Sometimes I'll throw in a handful (roughly 1/3 cup) of blueberries, strawerries, or some other fruit.

Buying the stuff with fruit at the bottom is tons more expensive and you're taking in a lot of carbs you don't need.
