People should read up on insurgencies, and how they evolve. Let's look at Iraq, for example. As recounted in the "Imperial Life in the Green Zone: Inside Iraq's Green Zone" by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, in the beginning, the insurgency was quite feckless. They would blow themselves up a lot, or make bombs that didn't work, and many of them were killed quite easily in encounters with American troops. This had the effect of killing off the less talented, but also imparted a steep learning curve on tactics and techniques, leading to an extremely costly quagmire after tens of thousands of casualties and trillions wasted.

It was and is a mistake to dismiss ANTIFA. First off, just like in an insurgency, arresting them or worse is only a very temporary and fleeting solution, because the social/political/economic conditions are stil in place that create the kind of people drawn to ANTIFA.

If all of the ANTIFA in Portland were in fact arrested for a long stretch of time, would all the broken homes, propaganda, radical (but not violent) leftist groups that churn out ANTIFA types suddenly cease to exist? This problem will not go away easily.

First, the operational level of war is about logistics, not tactics. Second, the enemy always gets a vote. Neither the Boomers confident in their tacticool AR-15 rifles nor the self-reliant GenXers with their concealed 5-shot .357 revolvers have any idea what they're actually likely to find themselves up against.

Note that these Patriots were sufficiently experienced to run rather than fight when they found themselves facing more than they could handle. Note as well that the police believe themselves to be in over their heads.
