Identity politics is anathema to multiple races peacefully coexisting in a democracy, especially when you have a media and a political party ready to pounce on every incident that plays up animosity between the various tribes (racial, political or cultural). If you think things are going to get better in the US, then ask yourself what the odds are that we aren't going to see something similar to this incident within the next couple of years. And then again after that. We're at the point now where all it takes is one bad actor caught on video, one bad cop (or a situation that makes the cop look he was in the wrong) and it will confirm, once again, that cops are targeting minorities - to everyone who already held that belief. Quoting statistics isn't going to change people's minds when they see someone black die on video at the hands of a white cop. It's been nearly 30 years since the LA riots and we're still seeing cities burned and businesses looted. As far as I'm concerned, this country is long past due for a national divorce. People talking about assimilation - assimilation to what? Assimilation to a culture that many believe that is inherently racist, who look at our country's past with revulsion because slavery overshadows every other part of our history. We don't share a common culture anymore, or a common religion, or a shared reverence for our country's founding fathers, or even a common language in many areas of our country. As our country inches closer to the demographic tipping point, the antagonism is just going to increase.
