The fact of the matter is that they had John Frusciante as the main writing force behind their best albums. Without him they're not the same.

RHCP are a once in a generation band. How many other bands that having been cranking out hits since the late 80s and are still relevant today? They remind me of The Eagles in terms of just putting out hit after hit. They are in my top three favorite bands of all time... perhaps even #1. I had the pleasure of seeing them when I was in the Ukraine and it was a pretty magical experience (no homo)

My favorite song of all time (it was actually a B-side from Blood Sugar Sex Magik)
1993

1999

2002

2006

2016

That timeline doe... I could have chosen from a damn near endless amounts of hits... Other then Soul to Squeeze I just picked the first videos YouTube recommended.

I went to see them in Budapest a couple of years ago after being a fan of theirs since I was 10. They were incredible, but agreed that without John Frusciante, they're not the same.

Soul to squeeze was technically an unreleased b side from blood, sugar, sex, Magik. It was actually released on the soundtrack album of the coneheads movie.

I tend to agree that their best stuff comes when John Frusciante is clean, sober, and participating. The album One Hot Minute is one I think most would prefer to forget. It was released in 1995. It was as bad as when U2 followed up achtung baby with zooropa.

Scar Tissue was released at the beginning of the summer of 1999. They got Frusciante clean and sober. People waited 8 years for that album. I can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years.

I love these guy's. Probably my all time favorite from my childhood. I was lucky enough to see them in 2013 with my dad, first concert I'd ever been to. They have unbelievable stage energy.

I'm an old fart and you will experience this the older you get.
Dug the Chili Peppers completely.
Saw them twice in '85, and again in '86, '87.
Blast.
After Uplift Mofo, it all went to shit.
Consequences of going to a major label?
Maybe. IDGAF either way.

Sooner or later, people you once looked up to will reveal themselves to be weasels, doormats, shits, or hacks.

I'm seriously not trying to be overly cynical -- I stick to principles though the men who hold them are perfectly fallible.

Call it the Grey Pill, if you will.

Saw em at a friends and family show at the Troubadour in L.A. They played Under the Bridge (with Frusciante). Pretty iconic. (A girl I dated has a prominent family and Chad Smith was a regular houseguest, met him a couple times, super cool dude)

Californication and By The Way were part of a very significant soundtrack of my life moving to and living in L.A. in my early 20s. But even then, I remember thinking "Man these guys got soft" and that opinion has only intensified over time, to the point where I can't really listen to them anymore unless it's from One Hot Minute or earlier. Talented songwriters for sure with a slew of hits, but I've also always thought flea was highly overrated and I don't care for his stage antics.

Their small tiff with Mr. Bungle also left a sour taste in my mouth...I'm a huge Mr. Bungle fan and Mike Patton in general, but they're a bit more odd and not quite as easy listening...though imo the MUCH more highly talented band. Anthony Kiedis basically had them pulled from some music festivals because he had a beef with Mike Patton. Total bitch move. I also have some dirt on him and the rest of the band that makes me think less of them. They probably should have stuck to jumping around on stage in their underwear high on coke and acid.
