I cracked open Everyday Saints and Other Stories by Archimandrite Tikhon Shevkunov and wow, what a great book so far!

So far I've read about the great and holy monks:
  • Archimandrite John Krestiankin
  • Archimandrite Seraphim
  • Father Nathaniel
  • Father Melchisedek
  • Father Antippus
I've so enjoyed what I've read so far that I'm already looking forward to unearthing other books and articles from the monks of this monastery.

Please post articles and other books you might know below!

I enjoyed that book. My favourite story was about Bishop Basil Rodzianko who was an emigre priest in London and then Bishop in America. He visited Russia briefly when the USSR was opening up and accepted the invitation to serve at a far flung parish outside of Moscow. On the way there he came across a road accident and served the funeral rite over a dead man. It turned out the victim had considered the Bishop his spiritual father though they had never met, because he had listened regularly to his Orthodox radio programme that was emitted from London into the USSR. Of course that would be a chance occurrence to a secular mind!

This video is the prelude to another video (which has been deleted by Youtube) where Met Tikhon proceeds to walk over and physically eject the nun from the church for refusing to wear a mask. Met Tikhon is a complete Covidist.
Lives of the Saints is an entertaining read but is clearly a propaganda piece of the MP/FSB. It is an apologetic for Sergianism and Stalinist USSR (The Great Patriotic War nonsense), camoflauged in humorous anecdotes.

Thank you for the translation and the extra info. More unknowns are how a nun came to be at that service alone!? That's impossible. So who was with her and what did they do? Then what happened to her and her monastery? Are they under his jurisdiction? Sorry, I know we probably can't answer these questions. I understand many people have or had affection for his book. It is extremely well-crafted, and very effective in its purpose. I picked it up with gusto, but after about halfway through, and without offending anybody, let's just say I lost my gusto... ...for the reasons you describe. Again, no offence meant to anyone with a good and wholesome fondness for his book. I can understand how inspirational it can have been for many people.

That makes me wonder if all the stories about the holy monks at the monastery are legit or not. I hope they are. I found them so edifying.

I just read an entire book on Russian Church History and I don't think I ran across the word "Sergianism" once. I guess I need to find another book if I'm to fully understand the situation.

Well, if you read anything the MP has a hand in you won't find anything. The book Russia's Catacomb Saints (Out of print, for political reasons, but you can find PDFs online) would be a good place to start.

Out of curiosity, which jurisdiction are you under and have you read the book?

The reason I asked is because I typically hear language relating to "Sergianism and Stalinist USSR" from old calendarists outside of the canonical Orthodox Church.

In any case its slightly strange that you've read a book you denounce twice. What examples do you have of the promotion of Sergianism and Stalinist USSR? Unlike you I only read it once but can't recall anything of the sort. I recall stories relating to the following types of people:
  • Father John Krestiankin who was arrested and sent to labour camps by the Soviet authorities
  • Bishop Mark of ROCOR
  • Bishop Basil Rodzianko who was an emigre priest broadcasting into the Soviet Union
  • Various other nuns and monks who were living under the radar in Soviet times
I don't think anyone could claim that stories which positively reflect on these individuals promote Sergianism and Stalinist USSR. But if you have some counter evidence I'd be interested to hear it.

I'm interested in his reply as well, as the book didn't leave me with a good feeling after reading it, but never have been able to pin why, and didn't think it was worth reading a second time to find out, but we may have to awhile for his response, seeing how his previous post was removed probably for the harsh criticism without evidence backing it, he must have got a few points.

This thread caused me to ask my priest a few questions yesterday about Sergianism and Metropolitan Tikhon, etc.

As part of his reply to me he said, "If anything, Metropolitan Tikhon is an anti-"Sergianist."

He also said at another point, "Metropolitan Tikhon is a superb author and was instrumental in healing the division in the Russian Church. I certainly disagree with him on the matter of the COVID vaccine."

He then gave me this additional counsel, "There could be clergy that I would advise my spiritual children to avoid... or might be advised by my spiritual father to avoid myself. But mostly we need to focus on our own salvation and our spiritual lives here in the [redacted]. Online conversations are more often harmful than beneficial."
