I was in the gym this morning and a chick walked in, spent 5 minutes taking selfies in the mirror and then proceeded to walk the fuck back out the door again.

She didn't even attempt some semblance of a workout, didn't bother to even hop on an exercise bike or treadmill.

I know chicks rarely take a workout seriously but that was brazen shit on a whole other level I'd never seen.

At least she was honest, and did not took any machine from someone who wants to work out for real.

Did nobody else look at these and think "hey, this makes stealing phones a lot easier"?

Overall, I agree with everyone above me, this is kind of stupid. On the contrary, think about the interesting videos you can take with that. Hopefully, someone will put that invention to good use instead of taking useless selfies.

It brings nothing new, people have been puting gopros on sticks for ages.

Even dogs do it :

So I saw someone using one of those in public this last weekend. The guy must have caught the look of disgust on my face given he looked rather embarrassed. What ever happened to just asking someone to take a photo?

I gave serious, serious thought of trying to create and sell a "selfie" tripod stand that was able to fold up into a reasonable size (i.e. able to fit in a purse), and try to bundle it with an iPhone app with a timer for the camera. Someone had beat me to it.

This just takes it to a whole new level, though.

Everytime I see a selfie I think: don't you have any friends you can get to take a picture with?

It used to be pictures were a social occasion. You took a picture because you wanted to remember a great time you had with your friends - a wedding, a family reunion, a great party, a stunning vacation - now pictures are something you use to get friends. You project an interesting life through social media in order to get others to pay attention to you and fill the void.

WTF, I thought this was a parody. Related to this topic, I saw a girl taking a duck faced selfie today on the escalator. I had the urge to smack her in the mouth with all that fake cuteness she was trying to muster up for her attention whoring pic.

Apparently there are a lot of places banning selfie sticks, thankfully.

The National Gallery in London has banned selfie sticks.

The gallery says it has placed them in the same category as tripods, which are banned "in order to protect paintings, individual privacy and the overall visitor experience".

The National Gallery ban follows other galleries around the world, including the Smithsonian museums in Washington.

The selfie stick is an elongated pole on which a camera or mobile phone can be attached to take a better photo.

Sales of the selfie stick have soared since last year and they are now a common sight at tourist sites.

The ban by the National Gallery was welcomed by art critic Brian Sewell. He told The Times: "They are possibly quite dangerous to the art work and cause appalling crowding around a painting.

"Anyone who actually wants to go and see a painting can't because people are too busy taking photos. I've seen things in the National Gallery which make my hair stand on end."

Give it 1-2 years and it will on a whole other level.

I think people are close to crossing over auto-drone technology (which follow you and film footage completely autonomously) and will start using it in a social environment. Think at the beach, jogging or outdoor music festival. People will have these little drones flying around taking pics and videos without them even thinking about it. They bring it in a backpack and just let it out for 15 minutes to do its thing. The technology is there its just not being used YET for that purpose.

I saw one of these for the first time ever a few months ago. There were about 20 Indians using one at Hearst Castle.

Asians seem to love photographing themselves and this was way before smartphones. I've noticed that a lot of FOB Asian women have their own photo as a background on their laptops and smartphones.

Back around the time this thread came out, I noticed that it was mostly Asian tourists using these, however they were increasingly used by everyone else as the second half of 2014 continued going on.

I imagine that when summer roles around this year, I'll see even more people out there with them. Asian tourists still predominate, but it's becoming more "diverse."

A friend of mine did his masters thesis on this. He is an insane athlete; snowboarding, dirtbiking and surfing. He built the prototype that had the drone track and film him. It was actually a cool concept especially for these types of sports.

Of course being used by athletes would be 10% of the market, and the rest would be even more useless shit uploaded into youtube.

And I see selfie sticks so often now I dont even notice them.

This is a great invention! I've been needing something like this for a long time... Now I can finally take a really good dick pic, get the whole thing in the shot instead of just the tip! :tard:
