I understand where you are coming from. I watched sports with my parents from the time I was 5 years old. I played them, basketball was what I was best at, I've played against former college players/professional international players, etc.

But the freedom you feel when you stop watching sports and stop caring is really amazing. You don't care if "your" team wins or not, and then eventually you don't even know if they are or are not playing. You start to do other things with that time that is far more fulfilling.

Basketball is actually growing pretty quickly in Eastern Europe. Arguably the best young talent in the league right now is Slovenian (Doncic).

Even in Western Europe there are examples of premier players (Sergio Llull) who were drafted by the NBA years ago and have refused to come over. And Llull was drafted by the Houston Rockets; it's a good team in a "good" location.

Basketball is huge in China too.

It's weird how the NBA kicked-off the whole corona panic in the US by seating 12,000 fans for OKC/Jazz and then cancelling the game while tip-off music was playing. I was watching and it seemed very convenient and reminded me of 911. Following that there was indeed a lot of talk by the NBA podcasters about corona being reminiscent of 911 (one guy even said that the virus could only be compared to his Grandpa dying).
