Western Civilization is the descendant of the Roman Empire, which went through exactly that. Then Newton and other groundbreaking work happened.

Bar an unforeseen catastrophe (which could happen but I'm not going to worry about), humankind has already seen some shit.

Just keep in mind that thus far, the rise and fall of empires is cyclical. No reason to think that will end, given the current evidence. Pockets of intelligence and knowledge will survive almost everything.
