I've got a Saint Bernard / Collie mix right now. He's big, drools like crazy, and sheds worse than he drools, but I wouldn't trade him for the world. Getting a puppy and raising it as your own is one of the best things a young man can do. It teaches discipline, patience, persistence, and the ability to care for something outside of yourself. I agree with the other posters about the horrible breeding that has happened to the German Shepherd. I grew up with one who had a little bit of that crouch, but not nearly as severe as they are now. The older he got, the more difficulty he had simply standing up. Towards the end of his life, his hips were so bad he couldn't even raise himself off the floor to greet us. He'd just lay there wagging his tail and looking at us with pitiful eyes. It was truly depressing.
