Agree completely. Let me describe my frustrating experience using an EV:
The other day I decided to rent a car and the "cheapest" option was an electric vehicle; Kia Niro EV or similar. It was the perfect opportunity to test drive an EV.
Thrifty desk told me the range was 275mi which was more than I needed for that day (200mi aprox). When I went to the garage to pick up the car they said there was only a Chevy Bolt.
To start, I opened the trunk and there was room for a single mid-size luggage. Had to put the rest in the back seat.
The interior looks cheap. A joke for a $30k vehicle.
It drives okay in the city but accelaration ain't impressive in the city and in highway you can't go past 92mph. I realized that when I was overtaking. The car suddently slowed down.
When I had 50mi range left I opened Apple Maps and Google Maps to see if I could find a charging station. I also had to find online what type of connector Chevy Bolt used (since one app had 7 different types to filter from). Saw one inside a Ford dealership. I go there and there was a single spot and available for free; -Great, I thought. But when I plug the charger, it showed on the screen that it'll take +10h to charge the vehicle. I stay there for 30min to charge a little and look for fast charging options.
After downloading 3 apps and wasting time giving my information (name, address, CC, email, car VIN number...), many showed up close to the airport. Nearest one had 4 charging stations. 2 fast, 2 slow ones; Fast ones had only 1 working and the lady was on the phone, the other slow one I was able to talk to the guy who was just connecting his car. He told me to leave it in the slow while I wait 1hr for the fast charger since the lady just arrived according to him.
When I try to pay with the app, there was an error trying to charge my CC. I was able to use my CC directly to unlock the charger but when I plug into my vehicle, it said it was a shared charger and I had to wait for the other car to finish! Basically, a useless charger.
I try to go back to the fast one and the lady was there on the phone trying to contact ChargingPoint+ but they couldn't do much. I tried to use the other fast station but it didn't accept the credit card directly and the app wasn't working. A lady behind me with a brand new Chrysler tried to charge it when I let her use and no luck too. She was on the phone trying to get help from the company.
I give up and look for another chargers. Inside the parking lot it was supposed to have more. But there was all slow ones inside the paid parking lot (inside the airport).
I was so pissed off about that ordeal that I went straight to Thrifty to return the car. It had only 10mi range and I was willing to pay $60 for returning with less than 10% battery. $35 fee if you return with up to 20%. They don't charge you if above 70%.
I disliked EV. Now I hate them.
Here's a YouTube video showing the problem:
