There was even a study done (the who, what, and where escapes me now, but it can be googled) where psilocybin mushrooms were given to priests in seminary several decades ago, and they all had experiences they called mystical, spiritual, what have you. Moreover, they were contacted decades later to follow up on the experiment, and for all of them, that trip was still a highlight of their spiritual lives.
