The Twitter censorship thread

Hey all,

Not exactly censorship related, but I have a dilemma. I routinely criticize the PM and others on Twitter and I ended up getting my account limited for 12 hours. Here’s my issue.

I registered the account in 2015 with my Philippines phone number. I’ve since moved back to Canada and never updated the phone number. I need to enter my number to unlock the account, which I can, I still know it, but I can’t receive the code they send via text.

There’s no option to advance beyond this screen. I’ve emailed twitter to explain the situation but I guess they’re in no hurry to respond.

Anyone ever have a similar issue? Is the account a goner?

George Floyd: Twitter drops 'master', 'slave' and 'blacklist'

Social media platform Twitter is dropping the terms "master", "slave" and "blacklist" in favour of more inclusive language.

The terms are frequently used in programming codes which originated decades ago.

US bank JPMorgan has also announced a similar move as more companies address racism following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

Replacing the terms could cost millions and take months, according to experts.

In programming speak, "master" refers to the main version of code that controls the "slaves," or replicas. "Blacklist" is used to describe items that are automatically denied, typically forbidden websites.

On Thursday, Twitter's engineering division tweeted out a set of words that it wants "to move away from using in favour of more inclusive language". The list includes replacing "whitelist" with "allowlist" and "master/slave" with "leader/follower".

Twitter suspended @misterantibully this week. One of the last edgy Twitter users on there. He was talking about (((God's chosen people))) and something to do with Sony, before his ejection.

Misterantibully was Mr. Metokur, right? I'm not a gamer so I don't follow his streams (also I don't have time for any streams), though some clips of him have been entertaining and he seems to have a massive following despite all the censorship against him. He does play in to internet drama a lot, though, which I get from a business perspective but which totally bores and depresses me as far as "winning the war".

I just liked following him because he was funny. Unfortunately, Twitter is becoming more and more like the anti-fun police.

Martin Sellner has been suspended

Twitter suspends more than 50 white nationalist accounts

Twitter has suspended more than 50 white nationalist accounts amid recent criticism over its handling of extremist content, a source familiar with the matter said Friday.

The move came days after NBC News published a story on a new report documenting the proliferation of white nationalist content on social media platforms.

“The accounts in question were suspended for violating our policies in relation to violent extremism,” Twitter said in a statement.

Twitter and YouTube were criticized in the report, released Tuesday by the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, for helping white nationalist groups spread their message and recruit new members.

The report focused on the Identitarian movement, also known as Generation Identity, an ideology based on the notion that people of European heritage are being "replaced" by immigrants. The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism identified 67 Twitter accounts for Generation Identity chapters in 14 countries with nearly 140,000 followers.

“I think this is a very important move Twitter made because it means the major international white nationalist group connected to the violence in Christchurch and many other attacks no longer can use Twitter to propagandize against people of color or, perhaps more importantly, to recruit young people into their movement,” said Heidi Beirich, co-author of the report, referring to the 2019 attack at a mosque in New Zealand in which a far-right extremist killed 51 people at two mosques.

One of the suspended accounts belonged to Martin Sellner, leader of the Identitarian Movement in Austria.

“It is another act of censorship of freedom of speech,” Sellner said in a phone interview.

“We are the only group really talking about mass immigration and population replacement. The mainstream has no answers to our question: Why should we accept becoming a minority in our own countries?” Sellner said.

This isn't censorship yet, but the Twitter web interface is getting more and more intrusive. The other day it logged me out randomly. When I logged back in, it asked me some question I had to answer. I don't remember what it was exactly, as I didn't think anything of it.

Today, it's asking me if my phone number is still accurate. I can't view my feed without it doing so.

They're ramping up to crack down on the election. For now, 3rd party twitter clients are not showing this behavior.
