Lefty Deadline Hollywood :

2nd Update, Midday: It’s not looking so spectacular for Warner Bros.’ Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey which is seeing a Friday of $12.6M (including last night’s $4M), and opening weekend around $33.5M per industry figures this afternoon. Finance sources prefer to wait until overseas figures come in to determine whether this net $84.5M production is in the black (some argue with me that the price was much more). At $33.5M, Birds of Prey is currently under tracking’s $50M-$55M projection and under what Warners was hoping for, which was $45M. We’ll give this DC Suicide Squad spinoff a chance to try and take off before we pluck its feathers in full, but I will say this: It’s a lazy R movie full of F bombs, and it feels in its bones like a PG-13 movie, especially coming off Suicide Squad. It’s not edgy, ultraviolent and genre pushing like Deadpool, Logan, Joker, heck, even Watchmen. And by making this movie R, the studio has potentially sidelined the younger female skewing Harley Quinn fanbase (and there’s plenty from the cartoon series, not just Suicide Squad). Case in point: Last night teens made up a minority of moviegoers, yet loved the movie the most at 94% on PostTrak. Will they come out tonight? Will they buys tickets to Gretel & Hansel and sneak into Birds of Prey?

In short:

makes me glad the only movie im going to go try to watch is Sonic just for nostalgic purposes.

I played every single game on the sega genesis growing up as a kid.

I hope that Jim Carrey won't just be absolute trash and ruin the movie with hyped up SJW rhetoric.

So I'm , going to go see how badly hollywood butchered the series

Comics are the gateway to children and shape their values, especially when kids are losing their ability to focus on reading books.

It's interesting to note that China's current film code is very similar to the US 1950s comics code. In films screened in China today, you cannot have a hero that is corrupt and gets away with evil deeds, or a homosexual act.

I agree that they should not have relaxed those codes, however:

I read comics in the 1980s and then they were often still very similar to the 50s or 60s. In the 1990s it began to get increasingly worse, but the biggest massive jump happened in the 00s and then another 200% increase of crap in the 2010s.

It's a full-spectrum control of course, but the majority of themes presented were not that negative - DC less even than Marvel because DC had still 1950s level storylines in the 1980s.

Birds of Prey review by a shitlord:

I wonder how the people do miss the propaganda in the movie when the casting and costumes were already woke, then all men are either evil or stupid, there are countless ball-kicks added. They even hired a male director for the action movies because the female director was given the job with close to no big-budget experience and no boxoffice success.

The interesting part is that Harley Quinn was a character made up in the Batman 1990s cartoon series which was so funny, endearing and popular that they added her to the universe.

She is already problematic in our times because the dominating feature of hers is the crazy love for the Joker.

Birds of Prey has a budget of 97 million. That's no bargain like Joker but it's low enough that it will probably squeak by without actually losing money. But the contrast of BoP's ratings to its grosses vs. Joker with its grosses AND Oscar noms (and likely wins) is telling. The SJW keep reeeeeing for "equality of outcome" rather than just equality of opportunity which they already have. They are coming at it from an entitlement/quota/affirmative-action mentality and the media is very firmly in their corner. It's really pitiful to see long screeds suggesting that Jennifer Lopez should have gotten an oscar nom for playing a stripper who fleeces men. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel. If the SJWs were out in force back in the day they'd have been picketing for Showgirls to win best picture instead of a Razzie.

This budget vs. grosses situation, IMHO, why woke Horror from Blumhouse like Gretel and Hansel is able to keep getting produced. Even if it flops, it makes back its budget. That used to be the formula that supported B movie fare from Roger Corman and it's now the only way for woke movies to muddle along if men conduct a silent boycott.

The big trial for get woke go broke is gonna be with Marvel Phase 4. That's going to be big budget. I really don't know how long the straight male normies will keep plunking down their cash like lemmings to be lectured and insulted and just plain turned off just because this shite is piggybacking onto well-loved IP.

Never believe Hollywood accounting, it's all cooked.

The powers that be know communism is just around the corner so they don't mind burning through shekels and losing hundreds of millions with woke movies though. I'm pretty sure they find some way to break even with these tax and accounting wise.

They want to pollute as many minds as possible and every jezebell made through these movies is a win for them.

Naturally evil women are probably 10% or so and with hook up culture, femnazi indoctrination and woke media actively anti male white women below the age of 30 are probably at least 30% at this point.

Granted the former was PG-13 as opposed to R rated for the latter.
Yet if most folk don't even want to bother with the latter.
That the production budgets are similar, means BoP is already on the back foot.

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl1196197377/?ref_=bo_tt_gr_1

Hollywood is not only propaganda ridden, but also incompetent being led by nepotism-hired Jews and now ever more diversity-ridden women and "minorities".

They put that R-rating in absolutely without need despite knowing that they want a comedic movie. They probably thought about The Joker and Deadpool and said: "R-rating that is why they succeeded!"

Those idiots never stopped considering that Deadpool was a killer with r-rated powers and The Joker was an intellectual more serious movie.

Harley Quinn was supposed to be fun and even her personality not that villanous. It did not make sense except for some execs who are a combination of meshugge-ness and hutzpe.

The Hollywood accounting is slanted for sure, but they will be making a loss with this one. The movie might have cost them 60-70 mio. $ for real, but that still means that they need to make 200 mio. $ worldwide minimum to break even due to the minimum advertising budget of 30 mio. $. It will be a loss for sure.

The tribe runs the US at this point. They can get nearly unlimited money funneled to them as investments from mutual funds and whatnot for their favorite cause (attacking the white male through their own women).

Normal economics don't apply to the woke world and given that everything has been fully subverted from bottom to top they can cock block any legal actions from investors etc. as they see fit as woke world generally is a collective effort and thought. (which they try to hide by playing all sides and downplaying / denying tribal involvement)

However, at the same time.
Even when a 'woke' orientated film doesn't do well. They don't put much effort into any more.
Whether a sequel to Terminator - Dark Flop or the news that Star Wars movies are on hold for eg.

Not to mention all the fake news media outlets that have folded or shed staff; & the Clinton Foundation losing its way.

So it doesn't quite seem as if Cabal funding is limitless.

DC’s ‘Birds of Prey’ hates men, but wants their money - no wonder it's bombing at the box office

The new DC Universe film ‘Birds of Prey’ is populated by despicable men, and feminist women who want to be just like them. The outcome: financial losses and moral bankruptcy.

‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ opened on Friday and stars two-time Academy Award nominated actress Margot Robbie reprising her role as DC Comics supervillain Harley Quinn.

The film is marketed as a girl power manifesto that re-imagines Harley Quinn without the condescending sexism feminists felt was so prominent in 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’, the last movie that featured Margot Robbie as Harley.

Although Suicide Squad was regarded as an underperformer with a notoriously troubled production history, it still made $750 million at the box office.

Early numbers suggest that despite mostly positive reviews from mainstream media outlets, the new film will struggle to do half that number in its theatrical run, and with a reported $100 million shooting budget, and substantial marketing costs, 'Birds of Prey' will probably lose money for Warner Brothers at the cinema.

How did they get it so badly wrong?

'Toxic masculinity' - check, 'male gaze' - check

‘Birds of Prey’ banished the problematic ‘male gaze’ of ‘Suicide Squad’ – that allegedly dehumanized Harley by making her purely an object of desire – by employing an all-female creative team that included producer Margot Robbie, writer Christina Hodson and director Cathy Yan. The production goes so far in exorcising men as to even have a soundtrack containing only female artists.

The problem, though, is that ‘Birds of Prey’ tries to thread the needle and make a chaotically cool combination of ‘Deadpool’ meets ‘Wonder Woman’ – only it doesn’t have the first clue about the sardonically masculine humor of ‘Deadpool’ and the appealing feminine power of ‘Wonder Woman’, or masculinity and femininity in general.

The film’s sexual politics are aggressive, to say the least. In our current cultural climate, toxic masculinity and masculinity have become synonymous, so it is no surprise that ‘Birds of Prey’ goes to great lengths to denigrate and disparage all of its male characters while also venerating all of its female ones.

Every man in the movie, with the lone exception being a character (played by the criminally underused actor Eddie Alfano) with fifteen seconds of screen time and no dialogue, is either entitled, conniving, maniacally violent, a rapist or all of the above.

In contrast, every female character wears the noble crown of resilient victimhood after having suffered at the cruel hands of men.

Is feminism about women being as violent as men?

The portrayal of men as misogynist beasts is pretty heavy-handed; at one point, Harley and her female friends are surrounded and the sadistic Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) yells to his army of all-male thugs, “Men of Gotham, go get those bitches!”

What’s so bizarre about the supposed girl power message of the movie is that, while it relentlessly tells us that men are despicable creatures, all of the female characters are lionized for trying to behave like men. As with the recent batch of feminist movies such as 2019’s ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, ‘Birds of Prey’ believes that feminism means women should act like men.

Even more baffling is the cinematic schizophrenia of ‘Birds of Prey’, as it obviously loathes men yet is so desperate for their attention it serves up a steady supply of hyper-violence. As Harley Quinn says, “nothing gets a guy’s attention like violence… blow something up, shoot someone.”

This is what happens when you put a confused agenda ahead of a good story

Totally coincidentally, the New York Times published an op-ed by actress Brit Marling, titled ‘I Don’t Want to be the Strong Female Lead’ on the day ‘Birds of Prey’ premiered.

In the piece Marling describes strong female leads by saying “She’s an assassin, a spy, a soldier, a superhero, a CEO. She can make a wound compress out of a maxi pad while on the lam. She’s got MacGyver’s resourcefulness but looks better in a tank top.”

In some ways this applies to ‘Birds of Prey’, since the women in it are smarter, tougher and stronger than the men, except they have been stripped of their sex appeal in a convoluted attempt to be pro-feminist.

For instance, Harley Quinn wore short shorts and alluring outfits in ‘Suicide Squad’, but in the female-empowering ‘Birds of Prey’ she dresses in baggy, Bermuda-length shorts and a pink sports bra. It’s as if Harley went full Lady Macbeth and cried “unsex me here,” and the filmmakers dutifully complied to stick it to the patriarchy.

Contrast this with the Super Bowl halftime show, where Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were declared fiercely feminist when they wore skimpy outfits and literally danced like strippers.

How can female filmmakers like Cathy Yan properly tell an empowering feminist story if feminists haven’t even figured out what feminism is yet?

This confusion manifests when ‘Birds of Prey’ defines women solely in opposition to men, but then has them emulate masculinity as a show of their feminine strength.

Brit Marling wasn’t commenting on the troubling Manichean anti-male sexual politics of ‘Birds of Prey’, but she could have been, when she eloquently wrote: “I don’t believe the feminine is sublime and the masculine is horrifying. I believe both are valuable, essential, powerful. But we have maligned one, venerated the other, and fallen into exaggerated performances of both that cause harm to all. How do we restore balance?”

That is a good question, but ‘Birds of Prey’ is oblivious to balance… and quality, for that matter. It’s a hot mess of a movie that features derivative, repetitive and dull action sequences, and that tries to be funny, but isn’t. Hell, there is a hyena in the movie and even he wasn’t laughing. Watching this thing felt like wading through an Olympic-sized swimming pool of radioactive 'You go girl!' vomit.

If equality is women making misandrist, hyper-violent, incoherently vapid and dreadful movies, then ‘Birds of Prey’ is a smashing success for feminism. It is also an abysmal failure for cinema… and probably humanity. It deserves to fail.

Edit.

On one hands it's them running down subverted companies, on the other hand it's investment money funneled to them.

VICE is super shady for example - a media outlet with barely any discernible income doing large scale subversion.

Time Warner and other tribal media companies can probably write off it's losses or do some other shady accounting to make their lack of profitability a non issue.

The Walt Disney Company (16%)[6] (apparently a very masonic company, promoting MK Ultra stuff to children etc.)

TPG Capital (44%)
Soros Fund Management (10%) (our favorite kill whitey investor that sent in the rapefugees to Europe through the open society)

...

It will be interesting to see if it can crawl to the point where it breaks even. Noting the amount Shazam amassed.
It's still tracking behind Shazam.
Yet I doubt it will generate large amounts of profit.
Plus, as per the Tim Pool tweet above & the association to that other mess (Ghostbusters 2016) & the general disdain for the movie.
Even if it does make a few million in profit. It won't be regarded well.

Movie showed all men as evil or dumb. Main character Quinn was so evil that she maliciously treated everyone.

In one scene in a club a guy called her a slut and she broke both his legs for it. So I guess when a woman in a club calls a man something, then he can break her arms for it?

Fuck them.

Also - the total boxoffice of 33 mio. $ US and 48 mio. $ - rest of the world. There are rumors that those numbers were padded by the studio in order to not be too embarrassing. They often buy tickets in bulk which they likely did for Captain Marvel as well. Even if the numbers are real, then they won't break even - they need 200 mio. $ + for that.

They only spent less this time. Many many people reported seeing the movie in near-empty cinemas.

Studios now spend some tens of millions on buying tickets in order to entice people to see it because of the "success". It has become part of the marketing budget just as paying for fake reviews on Rotten Tomatoes or other sites.

RT in the article put it well - they hate men, but want their money. They even hate men so far as to strip the female heroines of their sex-appeal - take that patriarchy!

Oh - but when they don't see it and the studio pads the numbers with another 10-20 mio. $ in fake ticket sales, then it's your fault for not going to the movie and getting screamed at by Big Red.

Shazam was a somewhat good movie with a likeable cast. This is not even remotely comparable.

Shazam made 140 mio. $ worldwide while this crap made 83 mio. $ worldwide - and even that is questionable as I mentioned looking at all the empty screens on the first weekend.

Shazam on top of it had positive buzz while this crap won't have any positive buzz - rather more negative as time goes on. The best reviews are "meh" - the ones who understand wokeness and feminism all say that it's clearly anti-men across board with de-sexualized, but villainized women.

Yeah exactly. A fun more 'family friendly' film that folk actually liked & had some rewatch value (Shazam).
Versus an R-rated film most don't care for or are dismissive of.

Birds of Ghey was always going to start on the back foot.

The Hero journey CANNOT WORK WITH A YOUNG WOMAN AS THEY ATTEMPTED TO DO WITH MAREYSUE. The female journey is at best a woman who somehow struggles through as in the movies Terminator I or Alien. The female hero is either someone who manages despite being a woman or the heroism is centered around female virtues like patience, femininity, sometimes cunning and manipulation (even if positive).

It's funny you say this.
Over the past couple of weeks, I've made my way "The Schwarzenegger Collection" DVDs that I picked up somewhere or other (some of these movies I was re-watching for the xxth time since I was a kid). This was my exact thought with Sarah Connor in T1, Anna in Predator, Valeria in Conan, Cindy in Commando, even young daughter Jenny in Commando.
Every one of these scripts would be handed back today "Nope, she's still not heroic/sassy enough. How about you go rewrite it and give the girl the "If it bleeds, we can kill it" or "I'll be back" line?"

Using the general rule that a film earns ~50% of what it earned the previous week & that I was very close to the mark with what I thought Terminator Dark Flop would make in the end.
If Birds Of Ghey earns $100mil in it's first week, & if it needs say $240mil to break even, the break down (rounding up) doesn't bode well.

Week to week for nine weeks : $100mil, $150mil, $175mil, $188mil, $195mil, $199mil, $201mil, $202mil, $203mil.

If the cinemas are already empty on opening weekend, doubt they'd keep this one around after two months.
