Travel in 2021

My husband and I wanted to take a road trip to Washington DC last year. We had to postpone, but now we’re looking to reschedule. We are in a position where we can go pretty much anytime. We rarely travel but when we do it’s usually a chance to visit various family, and it would be good to get away after this past year.

I really want to go to a few Smithsonian museums (he’s never been) and then take a side day trip to meet up with his side of the family to take nieces and nephews to an amusement park.

Any tips or tricks for the Smithsonian? What are everyone’s thoughts on general travel this year? Are you planning any trips with your families? I’m curious to hear people’s plans and what you’re looking forward to in 2021.

I also have an ulterior motive for asking... we have three choices of amusement park within a few hours of Washington. Busch Gardens Williamsburg, King’s Dominion Virginia, and Hershey Park, PA. I am least familiar with KD. I’m curious about anyone’s experiences with bringing kids to these parks and what would be the best value for a single day of going to one of these parks?

I've heard the best things about busch gardens. I'm partial to hershey park (i love chocolate). I've always wanted to go to colonial williamsburg. I'm not sure how these attractions are handling visits during covid, so that would be important to me.

Colonial Williamsburg is nice to visit- remember wanting to go to The College of William and Mary at the time of visiting.
The colonial site would be nice being it is mostly outside and requires walking out in nature.

I’m doing some looking into the effect of Covid on all the attractions. Anything that doesn’t work to our liking is automatically out of the equation. Hershey is great for chocolate and a nice resort park. Colonial Williamsburg has the attractions of amusement park, living history museum, and the Jamestown settlement nearby. We’d love to see all of the attractions, but that may extend our trip beyond our initial time frame and means.

Hi again, just resurrecting this thread because I’m still looking to plan some sort of road trip to the DC area in the coming months. We are looking to see some offbeat sites (heard of a Civil War ghost tour thing near Gettysburg!) as well as some of the popular Smithsonian museums.

Anyone familiar to the area? I would love some tips on good neighborhoods to find lodging, or good restaurants to eat at? Or any places to avoid? I’d like to stay away from super touristy things, any tips from a local would be appreciated!
