When I go to the local hipster beer bar down the road from my house in the suburbs I catch sneers and soft attitude from employees and patrons. It's like they can sniff me out and know I'm not a member of their tribe. Maybe it's how I dress, how I carry myself or how I wear my ball cap, but they know I'm not one of them.
When I go to the redneck bar at the base of my favorite mountain/wilderness area it's all smiles. Yesterday I talked to a woman at a gas station up there and she talked about "running people out of town" because the forest is closed and the town is on Level 2 "moment's notice" evacuation order due to the fires and they have concerns about arsonists and looters. My presence was never questioned, even as I drove up the road to the "closed forest." The sheriff stopped me several miles up just to inform me that the road was closed ahead, he was friendly and offered an alternative thru-road that was still open, but I opted just to turn around. Later on back in that same town I stop for a beer and a burger at the bar. A group of local men were patrolling the main drag and questioning visitors, but they strolled right past me, offering a friendly nod, as I sipped my beer and smoked my cigarette on the bar's patio.
