Where I live in EE the medical profession is still highly esteemed, it still is a highly competitive branch of higher education despite the average or below-average wages. Most docs I know are dedicated, hard-working and many of them truly idealistic (majority of them don't become rich from being a doctor in EE). We have many internationally esteemed surgeons etc. To make ends meet, most younger ones work several jobs totaling 70-80+ hours per week. However, when I've spoken to several of them during the pandemic, I was appalled. A large portion of diagnosticians and even a lab director with PhD at best hostipals in the country turned out to be mere algorithm followers, unable to comprehend basic statistics in papers published in their own field like confidence intervals, completely unable to draw proper conclusions from the studies, oblivious to contradictions (you don't need a medical degree to spot them - it's just basic grammar and logic!), totally trusting the data presented by the big pharma and even not knowing what specifically this data referred to. And a condescending attitude to any probing questions about lockdowns, vaccines, masks etc. from "non-medical professionals" to boot, at least until you tell them that you're a molecular biologist: essentially, "let's set your questions aside" and let us do some "real work" on "real patients" and not on "theoretical divagations". I admire their truly hard-working attitude, but man, it seems we have a huge problem with education.
