What exactly is "back cracking" and is it a good idea?

I was at the physical therapist a few days ago, and one of the staff offered to crack my back (after telling me some disclaimers). I accepted. It was an interesting sensation - but now I have some back pains a few days alter. I imagine the pain will go away in a few days. I do feel like I am standing up straighter after this, though.

Back cracking is a type of exercise that people do in order to relieve back pain. It involves bending forward, then arching the back backwards until it is touching the floor, then returning to start position. This exercise is also known as "spinal traction".

There are mixed opinions on whether or not this is a good idea. Some people say that this can relieve back pain, while others say that it can cause more damage to the spine.
