Be wary of people pushing Private Internet Access.
Every single time, without fail when this question is asked, someone will say I use PIA (not pointing any fingers here on this forum, I'm sure this is a genuine reply).
They are known for being a very poor service and for shilling the hell out of the internet. See the link I gave that gives the most thorough rundown and assessment of all VPN providers.
Also go to Torrentfreak and see all the ones that do not keep logs etc.

I have had no issues with PIA. Connection speeds are good, and they do not keep logs. However, I defer to Rigsby on this subject, as I am far from an expert.

I would take a second and seriously ask yourself why you need to be using a VPN.
Are you trying to avoid geolocation so you can watch US based netflix?

Or are you trying to hide your RVF usage and porn fetishes from an intelligence agency?

Not casting any aspersions at all on the good members of this community. Just talking generally in a wider sense. It certainly is very popular and many people are happy with it, having said all that.
I think it's good to have a few VPN's set up and ready to go on your machine. I use a few, from the very most popular (see that one privacy site I link to), to some lesser known and obscure ones that I will never mention to anyone.
Nord, Mullvad, Air - all top notch. You might need to research a bit more and test a bit though if you want to get one of the more obscure ones to fit your needs.
And there are other ways to go about this. Different kinds of anonymisation services (JonDonym, Proxomitron), but really a VPN is easier to deal with - once set up properly you can pretty much forget about it. Though I test every single time I connect to the net just to be sure. I trust nothing. I also assume it is a total waste of time and all the VPN companies are lying, that they are run by the CIA and FBI and live stream all of my activity goes back to the person at GCHQ that is assigned to me and monitoring my internet connection in real time.
I don't do anything naughty and there isn't a single thing I would be ashamed of if my entire browsing history got dumped. But it would be foolish in the extreme to not go through a VPN with the fascist totalitarian laws that are now the order of the day in my country. I am taking the fight to the pricks, and the first thing they will do is download my browsing history to silence me. If you fight on any kind of political level where you force real change, you are a target. Maybe you don't do that. Maybe you don't live in a country with draconian fascist censorship and stiff prison terms for using certain words. Also, just by being on this site, would you be happy for all and sundry to know that you post here? Fine. How do you feel about them being able to read every single one of your posts? Still happy?
Make the most of it. VPNs will be made illegal in a few years time. Child porn, terrorist incidents etc. etc. - all in the name of. Of course you can't ban VPN for business, but it would be plausible to do for home users. Some debate this, but this doesn't mean that they will not try, that they are not working right now, just how they solve this little problem. Once VPNs are banned it will then be illegal not to have an internet connection, citizen, and a camera in your living room, because, eh, you don't have anything to hide do you?
So far, I've been right about the way this all goes, from 10 years back even. I've been fighting this fight a long time. So far I have been vindicated on every single one of my paranoid fantasies. But the funny thing is, even in my wildest dreams, there are things that I just couldn't see. But the evil paranoid bastards the other end have whole teams of people working on this. I've been surprised but not shocked. These people will stop at nothing. They allow and perpetrate child pornography to further their agenda. They bomb innocent civilians with false flags. To further their agenda. And they will win, because not only do people not fight back, they are so punch-drunk with what is happening to them, that they can not even think straight. As long as they have their bread and circuses, they are happy. And the powers that will remain for the next 200 years know that. But most people are naive, especially the clever and the sophisticated ones.
I take no comfort in the fact that I was right. I've severely alienated myself. People have openly laughed in my face and mocked me.
But they aren't laughing now.
I'm wide open anyway. I do all kinds of silly things that get me tracked and put on databases. Like posting on threads like this on this forum for example. I know I'm on a list. I have been for years. I expect the knock on the door any day now. I genuinely believe it is coming. But I won't cower in fear.
I use a VPN for certain purposes, and for those purposes, that work for ME - they work just fine. I have 99 percent confidence that it does exactly what I want it to do. One of the major ones being, my neigbours not being able to access my browsing history because they work for a council department and I am a strange single Man in their community who keeps himself to himself. Must be a pedophile right? All single men are assumed to be pedophiles in the UK now, just about. By someone anyway.
And the other major reason is I'm going head to head with some heavy people that crush those that come up against them. I've been crushed by them before. I know they mean business. And they are the very people who will have the power to access my browsing history, and use it to full effect. And still I do not cower.
I have no interest in children. I have no interest in violence. But I fight for a better day, not accepting the status quo, trying to bring together people of all colours and genders and religions. And that is what makes me a threat. That is why I get shadow banned on youtube, and the other hate-mongers do not.
I have enough meta cognition to realise that this reads like a paranoid rant. Fully aware of that. But again, everything I said can be backed up by verifiable fact. We live in a paranoid age. And like Andy Grove said: only the paranoid survive. That's why they planted those chips in your computer that spy on you. And if you don't realise that they want to plant them in your head, then you are gullible and living in la la land.
I'll just finish off with a little 'wake up sheeple'! (plausible deniability that I'm not a 'subversive', just another ranting loon on the internet)
No, they aren't laughing any more. But I am. Having a good chuckle today in fact about the latest revelations from the Vault on wikileaks. Obfuscation techniques to make it look like the Chinese/Russians did the attack, but then other obfuscation techniques on top to make it look like they were trying to cover their tracks! All the while it was the USA that did the attack. This is a full time job for some people. This is what we have become. And this is what we allow. I'm laughing alright - tears of laughter.

Every now and again, I like to take a step back and re-evaluate a situation. To get new facts and viewpoints, but also to make sure I don't lose sight of the 'trees for the woods'.

I do however disagree vehemently with his assertion that using a VPN makes no difference as the 'metadata' is still being served. I'll go as far as calling him out and say he just doesn't know what he is talking about. Maybe he has studied this subject for longer than the hundreds of hours that I have, but I doubt it. On this point he is talking rubbish. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and concede that it is easy to get confused with all the browser fingerprinting and whatnot - in that case he has a point.
But the fact of the matter is, if you use a VPN on a fresh install with a locked down browser (see Valentines post after my little guide in the VPN thread) - no one will have a clue who you are. Of course, if you are so stupid that you go and order something on Amazon with your credit card, then yes, they will know who you are. But still it will have to be Amazon then feeding back that info and it being collated on the other databases. It is extremely confusing when you get down to it. But the fact remains, a VPN is invaluable for many things if you keep your wits about you.
If you used a VPN, there would be absolutely NO metadata at all that your ISP could see. All that metadata goes through google (and it will) and any purchases you make with your credit card via ebay, amazon, etc. etc. - of course. So this may be the source of his confusion.
If I get busted, I will know that either:
A: My particular VPN is compromised - and the shit will really hit the fan then.
B: It was Amazon that sold me down the river (ho ho ho).
C: It was google ((youtube)) that passed on my information.
D: Some other service depending on what it is I get busted for.
By busted, I mean, for example, someone in a position of authority presenting me with the fact I am a member of RVF and therefore a hate-monger. One example. I don't do anything naughty remember, so I am clean.
The trouble is, depending on how you get busted and what you get 'busted' for, it could be very difficult indeed to work out which one fucked you over.
It may even be that other things are in play and they just go straight to GCHQ or NSA and request your info. But even my evil feminazi neighbour might have difficulty in pulling that one.
Others, like MPs, not so much. These fuckers have power and they will crush you in to the ground at the first opportunity to show you who is boss. And they won't furnish you with the source of your leak.
In a way, I am a canary in the coal mine. I'm just starting to make provisions with 3rd parties for such eventualities. Though the fuss I am making is very very small - these bastards are so used to getting their own way, that any uppity little fucker that dare question their authority gets taught pretty quick who is in charge. Happened to me before, and they have much more ammo now.
Then again, maybe I have overblown this. Maybe this is just pure psyops and the threat of 'we know where you live' is enough to keep most people quiet.

In terms of security features, I don't believe any are as robust as NordVPN, which has double VPN and Tor Over VPN options. Of course, most people aren't going to use that stuff.
@Rigsby: I agree with your comments about that video. I also think people who claim VPN are useless because a determined governnment agency coming after you could still succeed are missing the point. If the FBI is literally following you around, of course you're in trouble, but most people aren't in that situation.

Do you guys have to keep switching VPNs to get the US Netflix library? Seems Netflix is playing whack a mole by blocking VPNs. I used VyprVPN for Netflix and it worked until a month later when they blocked it, too.
^ When you get that 'blocked' message, it means the specific server/IP is blocked. You should be able to manually switch to another server and get it working again.
VyperVPN doesn't have a lot of US servers though, so if you're having trouble with all of them, try switching to something like NordVPN, which has over a 1,000+.

Quick question about VPN: let's say you use a shared wifi network e.g. from your employer or school. You have to register and provide your personal info to be able to use it, so the network admin can find out who you are. If you also use a VPN all the time you use this wifi network, how much can the admin find out about you from your browsing history?
For example, if you use a VPN and a shared wifi:
-Can they read and save your whatsapp or other instant messenger chat history? How about your personal email?
-Can they find out if you visited a particular website such as this forum? If so, how much can they find out about you? Just the web address and the time you visited it? Your nickname as well? Keylog everything you wrote?
-If you automatically back up your Android phone records, reminders, tasks, photos etc from the google environment, how much of this info is available to the wifi admin?
The VPN provider is PIA if that matters.
