The problem isn't English being a second-language for guys. Guys get tremendous leeway on that front; not everyone has the same language background or writing skills. You're only expected to write considerately, not like Ernest Hemingway.

It'd be amazing if the mods did raise literacy standards to Ernest Hemingway levels. We'd all splinter off into various subgroups dedicated to writers like Thomas Wolfe and Twain. Then there'd be the black sheep posters who'd stir up shit by posting in the styles of Joyce or Faulkner, and hardcore oddballs whose every post would be meta in homage to books like Flowers for Algernon.

As a non-anglophone i appreciate the constructive criticism.

Us foreigners use a lot of english "text speak" mixed in our own language, the american influence is unstoppable and our own language is degenerating as well, which bothers me too. I'm glad there are fora like these who care about proper grammar, it will only help me with my english. I don't understand why anyone would have an issue with that.

Do they not teach you to capitalize proper nouns in your country?

Best post eva! (Sorry Tuth).

Best post ever. This might be the most amusing thing I've every read at the RVF.

(Couldn't handle the shame of using textspeak in this thread of all places).

I'm uncertain of the forum's official stance on the Oxford comma, clarification of which would benefit its membership, myself and the moderator.

I was always wondering what that was even called and I always use it. I know Harvard educated lawyers who don't use it, but I have been using it my whole life. I really don't know which way is correct.

Somebody corrected me on a Spanish term a few weeks ago and I usually say "fuck you" to those types because a) I've been speaking, reading, and writing Spanish my whole life and b) People who do that are usually insecure people trying to one-up me for some iinexplicable reason, but I researched the term and although it's not 100% clear whether it's correct, I now think the person was right.

Bonus tip for official written communications: never use smileys either.

I remember being weirded out by men using smilies when they first became commonplace a decade ago. For a while, I saw it as normal. Now, I'm back to being weirded out by grown men using smilies.

As someone who isn't a native English speaker it always blows my mind when people slip into heavy lol jk bae wht u doin tdy??? textspeak. I mean it seems to be actively harder to type out and shorten out all that stuff instead of writing normally. The only thing I do catch myself often doing is "swallowing" words when I'm typing fast. Like in my mind I'll pronounce a sentence and it'll be right but while I'm typing it out I'll simply skip a verb or a "the" or something. Carelessnes and apathy are the mindkiller.

I have sometimes trouble when native speakers communicate with me in textspeak. Sometimes the whole meaning of the sentence is lost to me.

Good post.

I honed my written language skills in my early blue pill days when I thought endless hours of c̶h̶a̶t̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶u̶p̶ entertaining girls on MSN with impeccable syntax would get me closer to touching a boob.

I can forgive bad grammar on forums.

What blows my mind is that I get professional emails like this all the time.

So, heed Tuth's words people.

I have to turn down business because I literally (and I mean that in the dictionary sense, not the hyper-tumblr girl sense) cannot understand what some would-be clients have emailed to me. Often, they've let an employee write me an email enquiring about my services and not checked it themselves, but the damage is done.

Don't be that business. Don't be that employee. Don't be that person.

Since Tuthmosis didn't reply to my PM, I'd like to ask if some of you could help me with the following. I've received a warning for 'textspeak' but I truly can't discover what I'm supposed to do different.

http://www.rooshvforum.com/thread-48244.html

Can anyone please tell me? I want to follow the rules but I can't when I don't know what rules I'm breaking..

EDIT: Guess I found it. Should not be using @ to replace 'at'.

You used the "at" symbol three times in your post. The "at" symbol (@) is not a word, and it shouldn't be used in normal prose unless the situation calls for it.

One other word of advice for you. You're skirting into dangerous territory with your post here (above) when you publicly complain that "Tuthmosis didn't reply to my PM."

That sort of thing is not done here.

This is the only forum of which I'm a member and I've always taken it for granted that members use proper grammar.

Sadly, articles like this one now exist that teach college students how to write a real email void of textspeak.

1. Use a clear subject line. The subject “Rhetorical Analysis Essay” would work a bit better than “heeeeelp!” (and much better than the unforgivable blank subject line).

2. Use a salutation and signature. Instead of jumping right into your message or saying “hey,” begin with a greeting like “Hello” or “Good afternoon,” and then address your professor by appropriate title and last name, such as “Prof. Xavier” or “Dr. Octavius.” (Though this can be tricky, depending on your teacher’s gender, rank and level of education, “Professor” is usually a safe bet for addressing a college teacher.) Similarly, instead of concluding with “Sent from my iPhone” or nothing at all, include a signature, such as “Best” or “Sincerely,” followed by your name.

3. Use standard punctuation, capitalization, spelling and grammar. Instead of writing “idk what 2 rite about in my paper can you help??” try something more like, “I am writing to ask about the topics you suggested in class yesterday.”

Corresponding with smart people has improved my ability to write concise emails, and reading a used copy of HBR Guide to Better Business Writing helped with some finer points of communication.

Thank you for the heads up. I'm not doint it to talk sh*t about him or anything. I can image he's got something better too do then reply every lame PM about a warning. That is all.

So if I offended or wronged anyone with this, I'm sorry, it wasn't my intention,

If you're serious about being a valuable contributing member of this forum, take a look at the bolded portions of your post, as quoted above.

Your intentions may be good, but your on-going punctuation and spelling errors send a different message.

Also, writing shit as "sh*t" has been frowned up here as well. Either use the word or don't. I don't like it personally, so I don't use it. I do throw out a "fuck" once a while when it's appropriate to what I am attempting to communicating.

It would be wise to patch things up with Tuth. He works hard to keep this forum from descending into chaos and we all benefit from his commitment. It's best if you communicate in whatever way comes naturally to you, that you appreciate his hard work and there are no hard feelings about the warning you received.

Since it's hard to communicate tone when writing on the Internet, it's usually best to go above and beyond to not write anything that might come across as sarcastic or catty. Unfortunately, we've had a few members here who were very pleasant guys in person, but their in-person personality didn't translate well when it came to the Internet. Don't be that guy. Just go above and beyond to demonstrate goodwill whenever possible.

Otherwise, I'm sure we are all looking forward to your positive contributions to the RVF. Best of luck.

Now son, me and my whole family come from the south and the Appalachia. So, when I say this...don't take offense.
